I suppose they don't need much, though. They mostly just get near the surface of the fishtank to get yummy food, and they hide in the plants and go behind rocks to privacy. Goldfish are lucky. :(

I dunno. Not much goldfish are capable of using an internet message board. Although they're probably better with smart phones.

What's cognitive ability? That sounds like a very human-centric concept. Driving cars and using computers and playing football might seem smart to us humans, but the rest of the animal kingdom sees all that the same as we see them.

So...we're no smarter than animals, it's just a different kind of intelligence?

I like this video. Sad little fish can't swim, then it can swim. Very pale for a goldfish, though, it might not have been exposed to much light when it was growing up. I wonder if it ever got bullied, if and when it lived with other fish.

Cross species comparisons are really hard, and the more and more we study nonhuman animal cognition, the more we find similarities, not differences.
