Seasons 1 - 10 - superb
Season 11 - 16 - good / very good
Season 17 onwards - really bad

I haven't actually seen every season or anything, only up until about 21 or 22, but I can't imagine they get better. Show should've ended in season 10. They still would've repeated it all the time, if Groening is that much of a capitalist whore (which I suspect is true).

season 1 = garbage
season 2-8 glorious
season 9 onwards = depends on how old you are

Why is season 1 garbage? I agree it wasn't very polished, especially the animation, but it was great to watch. Bart the General, Bart the Genuis, and various others. Homer's voice over was...slightly strange. For a long time, I thought they'd changed the voice actor.

Season 4 and onwards (until maybe about 8 or 9) is classic for me. 1-3 are sort of meh, but with standout episodes randomly scattered about.

it's garbage because nobody had any idea of what to do
plus it was the only early season outsourced to korean cheap animation factory and it showed

bart does not pass as 16 and gets a tattoo, hes 10
marge cheated on her husband
homers attempted suicide is made into a joke
nelson basically torturing bart is seen as a joke as is herman thinking its okay to wage war on a child
the therapy episode shows us they like being a fucked up abusive family
bart is clearly a future criminal when he chops off the head of jebidiah but nobody cares to get him help
they blindly send bart to that french place because they dislike having him there
