Deftones and Opeth are my fave bands. You are on the right path TC. Just stay away from the other bands that came from the Deftones scene like Korn and Limp Bizkit

Heavy metal is worse than garbage. It's makes our young people stray from the path of Jesus Christ and right into the arms of the devil.

This makes no sense as there is a lot of Christian metal bands.

I consider myself quite eclectic musically, and more so than most others I know who listen to music.

My main forte is metal and hard rock. I find these genres to have the most diversity when it comes to sound, musicianship, composition and has an incredible amount of talent among the many artists that permeate the genre.

Listen to these songs and tell me there isn't some incredible talent here.

What other types of music do you tend to like? There is probably a subgenre that mixes it. Like I said, I like folk music, and there are bands that mix folk with metal.

I really dont know... I honestly am a song by song kind of person. Its why I could never claim to like a specific album or person. I just know I dont like screaming, nor that 70s or 80s style of music, tbh. Which might also be my issue. It just gives a certain vibe I dont mesh with.

I will say when it comes to genres, I typically like high energy versions. I wish I was more musically intelligent, because Im sure theres instruments Im more fond of. I just dont know them.

Metalcore is hit or miss for me. I think one of the bands that does it best is Killswitch Engage. They have heavy riffs and some gruff vocals, yet they have some of the most melodic guitar sounds and vocals in their change ups.

I was going to mention As I Lay Dying for the Christian metal, but I believe their lead singer tried to hire a hitman to kill his wife, so I don't know if they fit the mold anymore.

Maybe try numetal? I don't know, I feel like you just don't want to like the genre at this point. No matter what any of us suggest, you just shoot it down with really vague answers. Maybe it's just not the genre for you and you should try something else. There is nothing forcing you to enjoy this music.

Well, I am trying to have the TC introduced to the more melodic and palatable side of metal considering he cut his teeth with Bleed from Meshuggah.

That's an intense and relentless song even for metal aficionados.

It sounds like you heard a part of one song and that's about it.

Seriously, there are literally metal singers who have operatic voices and rarely 'scream'. It's as diverse as saying, 'pop music' or 'rock music'.

Do you have any suggestions?

My friend tried, but I cant take her suggestions. Its to the point Im gonna have to dodge her so I dont have to say how obnoxious it is.

Im honestly trying to diversify my music palette.

What did she recommend?

Something called Meshuggah. I shoulda got the hint when one of their songs is named Bleed, but still.

She suggested other artist and bands of other genres for me to try, and I dont think our tastes are that similiar. But thats her heavy metal representative, so maybe Im judging too quickly.

The comment section on Bleed is pretty funny.

I dont know? Like, theres something about these songs that dont jibe, but they have a similar feeling. Its that feeling when I listen to a Beetles song. Its like, I know this song probably came out before 2000.

I know thats vague and really ignorant, but I dont know a better way to explain it. Again, I grew up conditioned to assume anything not rap was for white people. So its like, I dont know what adjectives to use when describing what I like.

What music do you listen to was my most hated question for this reason. I dont know. If I hear a song, and I like it, I try to write it down so I can get it. But I dont know enough about music (specifically rock) to know what to look for. Im gonna go through some of the links posted to try some of these.

I dont want yall to think Im just shooting stuff down. I genuinely appreciate the suggestions.

There was some good bands among that sub genre.

One of the better ones I found is American Head Charge.

Shades of Faith No More in the vocals which is always welcome, Mike Patton to this day is one of my favorite vocalists.

Not so much his side projects outside of FNM, Bungle or Tomahawk though.

Same. Some more "standard" groups I can appreciate, like Cannibal Corpse and Deicide (when it's one of their good albums and not one of their boring ones), but for the most part prog and tech-death get me going more.

Same with black metal. My first exposure to the genre was Deathspell Omega - their weirder shit too, not their early, almost-normal stuff. It's hard to pretend the pillars of the genre, like Transylvanian Hunger and such, make much of an impact when you start with "The Shrine of Mad Laughter."
