Residents described fleeing their homes and then getting stuck on gridlocked roads as flames approached, sparking explosions and toppling utility poles.

Things started exploding, said resident Gina Oviedo. People started getting out of their vehicles and running.

Sounds terrifying

It went something like 0 to 20,000 acres in a little over 12 hours, from my understanding, so that sounds legit

I'm in the Bay Area and the air quality is pretty lousy right now.

They should really soften the timber cutting regulations in California. Yes, it's dry and climate is a factor, but fires spread quickly because the forests are too dense and that's the reason why it spread so quickly.

Either you cut some of it or have it all burn in a fire. And when it burns, it'll burn more than just trees given the devastation of the wild fires in the last few years.

There are enough trees here. Trust me, I see hundreds of trees every time I drive to work and there is no shortage of oxygen.

The problem right now is the high density of trees per acre in forests. There are hundreds of trees per acre because of unchecked growth compared to less than 50 trees per acre 150 year ago. And there are 129 million dead trees in California. That's a lot of fuel for wildfires.

Wind, heat, lack of rain, inadequate brush controlled burns. Sparked by lightning, sparks from campfires/hobo camps/cars/fireworks/poorly maintained power lines, etc.

It's actually kind of amazing we don't have more wildfires than we do, to be honest.

This was the similar issue here in SoCal over a decade ago. I'm between two mountain ranges. Huge swaths of the pine trees were dead due to bark beetle infestations. Could the authorities do anything about it? No. Because hippies cried about the clearing of dead trees and about the endangered animals blah blah. But it'll burn terribly. Nope. Don't care. Because animals and our beautiful mostly dead forests are pretty.
So what happened. The biggest (at the time) forest fire in CA history. Whole damn mountain burned. And to this day those same hippies still complain about the poor animals were displaced and now their habitat is being taken over by oak instead of pine.
Before that it was brush clearing near homes not being allowed over the fucking kangaroo rat. Fire took the homes and the damn rats too.

Part of it is poor management from the past. Fires were put out, which allowed the brush to grow out of control. Now we use controlled burns to maintain a better balance, but some areas have decades of growth that should have burned years ago if nature had been allowed to take its course.

This too. So much money is spent trying to stop fires that are necessary to refresh the life of a forest.

Are you kidding? Do you know how much devastation the fires have caused in the last 5 years and you're worried about a mudslide that may block a road or 2? We haven't had rain in 7 months and the chance of mudslide is slim to none at the moment. Meanwhile, the chance of a wild fire is extremely high.

And we're not talking about deforestation. We're talking about thinning the trees so fires doesn't spread so quickly and cause billions in damage.

The point is to allow firefighters time to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. Fire spreading at 80 football fields per minute is an insane speed. That's what, 4.5 miles per minute? It takes a car driving at 55 mph about 5 minutes to cover the same distance.

I vaguely recall reading something about a regulation that changed and prohibited more trees from being cut down for environmental reasons. I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of it. We've had droughts before and it's never been this bad. Something else had to have changed.

This is the third or fourth time (not sure, but at least the third time) within the past year that I've had to keep the windows closed for days because of wildfire smoke. It's become such a common thing I've lost count. I was outside for about 25 minutes this morning and I'm still coughing it out. Bad times.

Here's one example of environmental groups stopping logging in California in 2016. A bunch of self back-padding scientists who claim that dead trees would not increase the danger of wildfires.

2016 - Logging Californias dead trees is harmful to the forests
https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/article/Logging-California-s-dead-trees-is-harmful-to-9698896.php

Two years later, these idiot scientists finally admit that they were a danger:

2018 - 100 Million Dead Trees Prompt Fears of Giant Wildfires
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/19/us/california-today-100-million-dead-trees-prompt-fears-of-giant-wildfires.html

For a bunch of guys who is supposed to use their brains, they let their emotions get better of their logic and refused to see reality until the devastation of wildfire in the last couple years.

One thing people don't understand is how the forests works. The more trees it has, the more trees it has to suck up water from the ground. They're basically fighting for the same resources until there is none. With the drought, there is nothing to sustain the life so many trees.

Tree thinning, the process of clearing out dead and unnecessary tress actually rejuvenates the forest and makes it less dry. This would not only slow down wildfires, it would make the trees more healthy in the long run.

A very unbiased source on the benefits of tree thinning:
