The games look and sound accurate, their mid-90s jagged pixels looking like you could grate a block of cheese with them. (A listing of licenses for open-source software accessible in the PlayStation Classics menu said that it uses the open-source PlayStation emulator PCSX ReARMed.) Oddly, many of the games on the PlayStation Classic were the European versions. When I booted up Final Fantasy VII, for example, I got the classic Licensed By Sony Computer Entertainment of America splash screen. But when I ran Battle Arena Toshinden, Grand Theft Auto, or Tekken 3, the screen said Licensed By Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. There are some tiny differences that I could spot in the games, such as having to select a United Kingdom flag from a menu if you wanted Grand Theft Autos text to display in English. (Im not sure if there are any major differences buried later in any of the games.) Bare-bones is probably the most accurate summation I can give of the PlayStation Classic so far. There are no special screen borders or graphic display options. Theres a QR code that will load up manuals on the PlayStation website, but it wasnt functional during the preview event. Theres a screensaver option that will dim the screen after a few minutes. There are next to no options - you'll have the ability to enable a screensaver, tinker with power saving modes and language and... That's it. There are no screen filters, and nothing to try and soothe the transition of these games onto TVs that they were never designed for. The output is 720p, a logical enough choice given the majority of the games here are 244p and upscale fairly cleanly with small black borders either side of the image, but it can't hide the fact that something feels off about how these games look and play. Getting the relatively crude 3D work of original PlayStation games to play nicely on modern displays was always going to be a tougher task than that faced than by Nintendo with its previous 2D-dominated Classic consoles, but the soft scaling doesn't help its cause, and there's noticeable lag - minimally so when playing a 30fps game such as Ridge Racer Type 4, but much more pronounced in 60fps games such as Mr. Driller or Tekken 3. They feel soupy in the hand - though that's as much the fault of modern displays compared to the more responsive CRTs these games were designed for than anything else. It's probably the worst style of game to be a lazy cash-in because it's supposed to be an opportunity to celebrate PlayStation. Serviceable wasn't good enough. You can't do a game that's all about fan service and attention to detail and then don't bother with either of those things. Smash Bros is a total celebration of Nintendo and video games. Meanwhile PlayStation All-Stars was used to market unreleased Metal Gear and Bioshock games. The Bioshock Infinite level doesn't even reflect the final product. The main menu uses a PowerPoint background. It screams cheap. I'm not even getting into how the game isn't even that fun to play. It fails before you even get started. Which again seems to be repeating with the PS1 Classic. Even ignoring the lackluster line-up you've got a barebones mini console that uses an open source emulator, 50hz PAL games and a thrown together UI that lacks basic features like screen filters. If you were to reduce both games to featureless wireframe fighters, psasbr is much more interesting/fun. Strictly at a technical viewpoint, psasbr had the better gameplay. Of course, as mvci has taught us, characters are not functions and no one really gives a shit about Ratchet or Cole the way they do for Mario and Pikachu. The game never had a chance because it was just a subpar fighter completely lacking in the reasons that drew people to Smash in the first place.
