Like, it would be one thing if they never ended up making a sequel to The Incredibles. But now that it's out on dvd, and excited as I am to watch it, it made me wonder what could have possibly taken so long.

i havent seen it but apparently it takes place like immediately where the first film ended
and the plot is at its core a retelling of the first one just with mr and mrs incredibles roles reversed

Whats really amazing to me was how the movie - a sequel fourteen years in the making - felt so rushed.

They literally made 3 cars sequels and even made a sequel to our childhood movie toy story, not to mention all the other sequels they've got lining up (hell, they made a sequel prequel thing in finding dory I hear? I dunno didn't watch that)

But Incredibles, a movie that actually could have a sequel that's good and builds on the foundation of the original, didn't until now. It's... it's weird is what it is.

Some executive pitched the idea as a safe bet to make money. It's safe to say the creator didn't care about making a sequel.

And the kids are still kids

That's what I hate, the fact that they waited so long so obviously they changed the voice actors because the actual kids they got back in 2004ish are adults now. And you can tell they changed dash's voice actor.

Vy's is apparently the same since she was always voiced by an adult woman but she still sounds different due to age, like how the simpsons characters now sound older and gruffer than 90s simpsons.

Like is this an animation error, was it always this sunken? It makes sense for bob to have them but only Violet's voice actor is 40, not the character so...

I must be crazy because the movie weirdly seems... uglier than the original? Like is that even possible? Maybe I'm being too hasty to judge since the whole waiting over a decade thing sets too high expectations.

for some reason i much prefer the pacing of the original over the new one which apparently a lot of people criticized for being too slow in the beginning.

they had so much action spread across the movie that the actual climax at the end felt tame in comparison to the blowout in the first one.

also, dash was nerfed considerably >_>(major spoilers since it's called "how it should have ended" and all..):

Monsters University was the prequel. Finding Dori was more of a spin off movie.

Plot reasons. They're on the run and trying to live out of one motel room. No one looks great.

And while the two movies do kind of mirror one another, great swaths of the plot are devoted to developing Bob as parent, and the kids. Compare that to the B-plot of the first movie, which is mostly Bob's midlife crisis.

TC: "I hate that the kids are still kids"
You: "How can you hate that? You know the film takes place right after the first one"

Could it be that TC would have preferred it that the film take place later in the timeline? Thereby excusing the change in VAs?

I don't see what's difficult to understand spikedevil. You know how children grow up? So obviously they can't keep playing the child character because a 20 year old cannot pass for a 10 year old. It's a dilemma a lot of shows that have child actors face when a small amount of time (or no amount of time) has passed in a show/movie while the actors have aged 2-3 years since obviously they filmed it later.

Now with Incredibles 2, they waited a whopping 14 years to make it, so had to change one of the original voice actors. It's akin to a soap opera or regular tv show changing the actor portraying the same character, it's just something unfortunate. With voice acting it's not as 1:1 comparison as actual live action onscreen of course, but that was the point I was getting across, that in such a large span of time shit happens so you have to change the cast, and people who grow attached to characters obviously notice a different actor or voice actor. Or an aged sound of a voice actor.

I hope that made more sense? Please let me know if you need explaining further.

Just the opposite, that movie have been made immediately so that there would be no change in VA.

It probably has something to do with merch and toy sales. Toy Story and Cars received sequels fairly quickly because they were money makers. I dont think the Incredibles toy line does nearly as well.

https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/04/16/why-did-incredibles-2-take-so-long-brad-bird-explains-the-sequels-delay

For writer-director Brad Bird, it all came down to story.

The thing is, many sequels are cash grabs, Bird told reporters during a recent press event to promote Incredibles 2. Theres a saying in the business that I cant stand, where they go, if you dont make another one, youre leaving money on the table. Its like, money on the table is not what makes me get up in the morning; making something that people are gonna enjoy a hundred years from now, thats what gets me up. So if it were a cash grab, we would not have taken fourteen years it makes no financial sense to wait this long its purely [that] we had a story we wanted to tell.

Quality over Quantity.
