To give myself something to do in the dead time between Halloween and Christmas, I figured I'd watch a canine-related animated movie every Monday in November.

My thoughts on 101 Dalmatians:

** Sgt. Tibbs is awesome. He's so politely British, he'll stop and salute his superior officer even when in the middle of running away from the bad guys.

** They lay the whole "devil woman" thing on a little thick. In addition to the name, De Vil's family home is called Hell Hall (no clue how they slipped that one by) and she has a red phone which is shaped like the devil. This chick would totally gush if she met Chernabog.

** Lady has one of the weirdest cameos I've seen. She appears at the bottom of the screen, partly obscured by shadow, for a fraction of a second. If you know what you're looking for, you can still miss it.

** White dogs cover themselves in soot to elude detection. Does this count as blackface?

** "Crazy woman driver!", a line you're guaranteed not to hear in the live action remake. The forthcoming one, I mean.

** There's a Christmas tree in the last scene of the movie. Does this count as my first Christmas movie of the season?

To be fair, they don't take on any blackface mannerisms like Tom & Jerry would have. I could still see it being controversial if done today. If the Lion King has shown us anything, it's that humans and animals are the same thing.

There isn't a live action remake in the works, the upcoming movie is a prequel about Cruella.

I'm really curious how they're going to make her a victim when she wants to steal her friend's pets and skin them.
