Current Events > A black guy told me that it's okay for me to use the N word. Is he wrong?

So I was discussing the inappropriateness of using the N word with my friend while we were waiting for the movie to start. (We were seeing Bohemian Rhapsody).

I told my friend my personal views. "I don't believe it's okay to use the N word that ends in a hard R in any situation."

And the guy behind us says "Excuse me" and I turn around and its a huge black man. I was freaking out on the inside I thought he was gonna yell at me for talking about the N word or something.

He says to us "****** is just a word. It only holds meaning to people who want it to hold meaning, and the people who want it to hold meaning are those who wish to seek pity for themselves, and people who still believe the word can hurt us."

So I asked for clarification, "So it's okay for white people to just say the word if they aren't using it to be derogatory towards black people?"

"Those are my beliefs, yes."

After that we talked a little more about the movie that was about to start and that was it. But I've been thinking about what he said. I still don't feel like I should say the N-word in any circumstance. What do you guys think?

You can't be conflicted if you use it all the time around black people and at work. So that's what you have to do. Everyone will be proud of you and will want to be your friend.

Never used it in my life. Regarding my posts, I'm not sure what you're insinuating?

Some black people have different opinions on the usage of the word, but of course liberals will have you believe black people are one big hivemind and all have the same opinions

That's got me wondering though. If I was to follow his words and say the N word jokingly with my friends. Am I racist? Or is it subjective and it's up to the individual to deem if I am racist?

I know black people with that opinion, but it's because different people have different opinions. You can't just assume what one black guy says is what all black people think.
