Hey everybody, I've been working on a little project where I extract zone geometry from FFXI and then reimport that geometry into Unreal Engine 4, and I'm looking for people who might be interested in helping me. I've provided a brief tutorial below explaining the process of how to do it, along with some videos of a few zones I've already done, and a Discord channel to keep in touch. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. ;)

Zone design and music were among my favorite things about XI, which I almost hated otherwise, so this is relevant to my interests.

I'd love to see more renderings of Mithras though. Many, many more Mithra renderings.

In the Discord we've been having a discussion about whether or not to get rid of the invisible walls on the edges of cliffs. What do you guys think?

Being able to walk through the tall grass instead of what we see in the Windurst video would have been fine, too. With how it's remade, it looks like a questionable design choice rather than a weird limitation. Similar could also be said when jumping up to the edges of the map where you see the graphics just end, maybe?

As for invisible walls along the edges of cliffs, could you remind me which cliffs we're referring to? Like, some invisible walls might be fine as arbitrary edges to zones that are already fairly large, but in the middle of a zone not so much when it just impedes movement.

Yeah, that was just because of the way I did the collision meshes for that video. I've since discovered a new method that doesn't have that problem.

Like that big canyon in North Gustaberg, for example.

My memories of Gustaberg are a bit vague at the moment, having been so many years since I played the game or seen any images, but if this looks like a sort of canyon you want to be able to explore then it needs only a means to get in or out. Otherwise it's just a trap without invisible walling to keep folk from falling in.

The canyon has a way of getting in and out: going through Dangruf Wadi. I just thought it would be fun if there wasn't an invisible wall on the edge of the cliff preventing you from jumping down from above.

In that case, if the spot to hop down is logically sound for the jump itself, and the person wandering about wants to risk life and limb by taking that shortcut, then they can. I know no monsters or so much worry for falling damage, but that's still my mindset. Is the hypothetical risk worth the trip? So yeah, doing away with the invisible wall could be fine.

Not in well over twelve years. Even now I am on a break from XIV, which is mostly a different game.

I say mostly because Eureka is a poor man's XI mixed with already unpopular content from the previous expansion. Gods, I hate XI.

Was on Garuda as Kiyala mithra first char, and then later Lilianna elvaan F second char

Lilianna became Avereith (not my choice, boo someone else had the account at the time) upon Garuda merging to Lakshmi

I was on... Leviathan server, iirc? I wanted to play Mithra, but chose Elvaan instead for reasons I don't quite recall. I regretted that. I considered scrapping my Elvaan despite the progress made, my computer died, I got it fixed, and then discovered and started playing City of Villains. So I didn't get to play a catgirl in any FF until patch 2.4 of FFXIV.

I think most of the arguments were around game design. I had been studying web design and user experience at my university at the time, and was trying to apply my newly acquired knowledge to FFXI by pointing out design flaws in the interface. I guess some of the fanboys didn't appreciate that. =/

Plus I had also gotten into WoW, and was wishing FFXI had a lot of the features WoW had. Looking back, I guess you could say I wanted FFXI to be the game FFXIV is today, lol.

Anyway, you interested in helping out with the project? Even if you're not, you could still join the Discord for fun.

I mean, XIV tried to redo a poor man's XI by combining it with already unpopular content. The lack of good features XI had, and meshing what's left with XIV's faster combat, really didn't mesh.

On the other hand, you can look at the overall gameplay and style of XI, and tweak the experience so the style is still there, but there's less reliance on rng, less waiting for text to scroll at a mile per hour, and making monsters slightly less beefy with their health. You can also do something different in how the menus work so the actions can still be chosen and take a moment to use, as per stylistic pacing, but the choice itself is easier to reach and smoother to utilize.

That's my thought on it, at least.
