why didn't she have her ID on her

Why are you victim blaming?

the only thing she's a victim of is law enforcement doing its due diligence

If law enforcement had done its due diligence, she wouldn't have been detained by ICE at all. You aren't required by law to carry ID with you.

It's not required, but keeping it on you whenever you leave your home prevents a great deal of problems that may arise just because you forgot to take it with you.

"Problems that may arise because you forgot to take your ID with you" shouldn't include getting detained by ICE and threatened with deportation because your skin is brown.

"Problems that may arise because you forgot to take your ID with you" would be stuff like:
- Not being able to buy beer
- Not being able to buy lottery tickets
- Not being able to open a bank account
- Not being able to buy/test drive a car
- Not being able to vote in a state with a voter ID law in place

favoring racial profiling and wanting to treat people like shit based on their skin color is, though.

Talking about profiling, poor people are more likely to be uneducated or mug other people, so I guess you should be profiled too ;)

@Philoktetes How does it feel?

That "inferior" (in your eyes, because of her race) woman that you feel "doesn't belong here" just made 50k, more than you will probably earn in your entire life.

And she has a real job too. You will never be as accomplished as her. Not so "supreme" now huh?

For the relevant stuff that really kicked my career off... I started out by uhh... getting... the CBT Nuggets training videos for Cisco certs. I watched those, then bought the official certification guides from Cisco Press. These are available online as well in PDF form. I typically get the physical books for initial studying and then I get the ebook format for reference on some finer details in the real world.

The CBT Nuggets videos taught me quite a bit, but not quite enough to pass the exam. I still use the subnetting method from CBT Nuggets today. It's the simplest method I've seen and doesn't require a ton of memorization of data. You just have to remember a handful of rules to go by and you can figure out any subnetting issue really quickly.

8/22/2013 - I passed the exam for the CCENT (Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician)
12/23/2013 - I followed the same process and passed the exam for the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) Routing and Switching on the 2nd try
6/25/2014 - Passed the exam for CCNA Security

Can't remember the exact dates, but I went on to pass the 3 exams for CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) Routing and Switching in the next year and a half or so.

After I got my CCNA Security, I was promoted to network engineer at my old job. During the process of working through the 3 CCNP Route/Switch exams, the company was bought out by a larger company. I got my CCNP Route/Switch cert about 3 months after that and had two formal job offers within the next 30 days.

CCENT - Entry level Cisco cert. Great for working in a NOC or doing low level network analysis/troubleshooting, and you'd typically be escalating issues to a higher level tech/engineer.
CCNA - Most people who get their CCENT go on to get the CCNA, I think. It covers networking in more detail and with more depth and teaches more advanced concepts.
CCNP - This is a pretty big step up. At this level, you're expected to be able to design, implement, and troubleshoot the related material in an enterprise environment.

CCIE - Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert... At this level, (I think) you're considered a network architect and can handle almost all issues related to Cisco networking in the relevant track. I think I'm gonna go for this pretty soon. Not sure if I'll be able to actually do it, but I want to give it at least a few tries.

I mean, I'd say I'm pretty smart, but... One thing Jeremy Ciora (CBT Nuggets trainer for the route/switch track) said really clicked with me, which removed my fear of trying to go for higher level certs.

There are things in networking that are very advanced... But they aren't hard. Previously, in my mind, the two things were one and the same. Once he delved into what he was prefacing with that, I was like "Huh, he's right... And that applies to most of this stuff, really."

There's a lot of info that you need to understand/know/memorize/etc. in the networking world, but so far it's all logical. Everything follows a certain set of rules.

The super minute stuff you only really need to memorize for the exams, but it's all very logical. There isn't really any guess work unless you're trying to troubleshoot stuff. Even then, there's a system to troubleshooting that will get you by as long as you understand networking concepts.

It's very important, especially when dealing with service providers (coughat&tcoughcough) that you keep those networking concepts in mind when you're troubleshooting stuff. Many service providers will try to slide dumb bullshit past you, and 99% of people will just accept what they say because they don't understand how networking works.
