It's because you cannot divide something into nothing. There has to be something.

If you multiply something by nothing, you have nothing.

If you divide something into nothing, that makes no sense.

They did; it leads to contradictions. Thus, even though it does inconvenience us, we have to live with the fact that we simply cannot divide by zero*

To be fair, that implies the assumption that 0 times infinity is infinity.

Mathematically, zero times infinity is actually an indeterminant form, i.e. it's ambiguous.

Yeah. How did you jump to y+y=y?

x=y so for any x or any y you can sub in x or y and it holds true. But most importantly, x-y=0. You notice what we divide by in step 5 btw?

To see why division by zero is impossible, take a division problem and investigate what happens as the divisor is made smaller and smaller.

10/10 = 1
10/5 = 2
10/1 = 10
10/0.2 = 50
10/0.04 = 250
10/0.008 = 1250

As you can see, the smaller the divisor the larger the quotient. If you take it to the extreme and divide by the smallest possible number you will get an infinitely large number. Thus division by zero is impossible.

The symbolic manipulation is all correct. I obviously understand that the dividing by 0 part is wrong.

The person I'm quoting thinks that something fishy is going on because the next line "looks much simpler than the previous one".
