It is not necessary. But I would definitely recommend it both because RDR is a masterpiece, but also because you will enjoy interacting with the characters in the gang more in 1899 after playing John Marsten in 1911.

There is a 20 minute video on youtube about the stories of the first 2 games.

It's a prequel, so it's maybe even better to have not played rdr since you don't already know the fate of some characters

RDR2 is a prequel I know, but prequels sometimes still depend on knowledge of the universe, like youd miss a lot on Better Call Saul if you hadnt seen BrBa --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
