It would have to be a plot that feels significant and leads to emotional moments while also having callbacks to the entire series.

Have one of those future episodes where Bart and Lisa jump to adulthood and become better parents or something.

First act, either Homer drunk with some town idiots or Bart trying to impress Nelson and some kids ends up causing the nuclear plant to malfunction and Springfield's water supply is contaminated. Burns decides to close up shop and leave town instead of cleaning up the mess. The government declares Springfield a disaster area and rescinds its status as a town.
Act two, town hall meeting where residents debate what to do. Mayor pledges to help, gets caught hoarding cash on his way out, arrested by Quimby. Town starts to go to shit, looting and fires everywhere. Various townspeople either exit or hunker down in comedic fashion. Act three, Simpsons debate whether to leave, Marge and Lisa insist it's better to stay and make their home better than abandon it. Five years later, the opening of the Simpsons plays with Springfield looking awful, all the characters slightly older and haggard looking (holes in clothes, age lines), but all the characters who remain still go through the same motions as the original opening, except Homer will be getting off work from the bowling alley and Bart might be skating home from a part time job instead of school. The family comes together on the couch and watches tv like always. The end. --- He might be the president, but it's not his country. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Nope. They've spent 30 years with no character development and squashed any sort of emotional payout over the last few years. There is no real resolution that is going to please everyone at this point. Likely, they'll just do something weird like move it to a streaming service and it will get lost in the shuffle after the publicity dies down.

There is no real resolution that is going to please everyone at this point. Likely, they'll just do something weird like move it to a streaming service and it will get lost in the shuffle after the publicity dies down. I remember reading an article some years back where the (modern) writers admitted that character was less important than the jokes. Or something like that; I can't find the article. But the basic idea seemed to be that they could write a character any way they wanted as long as it made the joke work. To me, that says a lot about modern Simpsons. I honestly don't feel there is a good way to end the show. I haven't watched it in years and would hardly notice if it ended. Certainly, the final episode would generate a ton of buzz and produce great ratings, but the time to bring the series to a meaningful conclusion that most people would care about has long passed. --- Fren Code: 2767-3374-3343 || IGN: Penny || TSV: 3067 || Sig NFT I hate sarcasm. Bart comes home one day with a box of weed all grinning to himself, and Homer sees it and is like "What is that?" And Bart quickly puts it behind his back and is like "Nothing!" and Homer is all "Why you litte...!" and starts choking him, then Marge hits him off, then Santa's Little Helper attacks Marge, and Lisa is trying to pull Santa's Little Helper off and the fight spills over outside where it crashes into Ned Flanders who finally loses it and starts a fist fight, and then everyone still fighting over this box of weed and huge city wide brawl starts to break out after Bart mid-fight makes a prank call to Moe's Tavern to incense him to joint he fight, and the comic book guy and Barney and literally everyone from every season all gets hit by it and they do another crossover with Family Guy just to have Peter and the Chicken fighting in it as well and Burns dies in the fight. Enraged Smithers decides to intentionally blow up the reactor as a response nuking the entire city. The box of weed sits at the top of a crater, and you see Bart's hand reach up, pulling himself over the top. He opens the box and there's no weed at all it's actually just a butterfinger bar and he unwraps it and eats it saying "Nobody better lay a finger on my butterfinger."

But the basic idea seemed to be that they could write a character any way they wanted as long as it made the joke work. To me, that says a lot about modern Simpsons. Yeah? That makes sense. Family Guy went down the same route. The characters were originally funny because they were exaggerations or parodies of existing sitcom stereotypes. Then, as the seasons wore on, they became parodies of themselves and completely lost the whole, 'this is your family sitcom on drugs' premise. The last season I watched actually was a great return to form, but I don't know if that will stick or not. ... Copied to Clipboard!
