I have noticed this, too. I have no problem selecting No tip. You picked up an item, placed it on the counter for me, and scanned it. Why should I pay an extra 20% for it??

It's awkward, like they have this technology where they want you to tip, either in 10,15, or 20%+ increments as choices for making things that they're supposed to like Boba tea or sandwiches.

It's not that it's a "problem," it's the fact that it's active vs. passive

For most places without ipad/tablet ordering, they swipe the card, occasionally you sign, and you're done. If you don't tip, that's just how it is designed.

However, now, you have to actively press a button, saying "I am actively choosing not to give you additional money."

That's why it's so much different. Previously, "doing nothing = no tip" was passive. Now, they force you into taking action, thus making you actively select "no tip."

I hope that makes sense, it makes a lot more sense in my head.

i only tip when im going to a sit down restaurant where im being waited on by actual servers. if its like fast food, or just them getting food from behind the counter i don't.

or if i just feel nice.

The first place I saw one was at this vape shop. I bought some tobacco juice and the guy just placed a bottle by the register and rang me up. I just cant justify paying more for something in these circumstances, when there was no extra effort.

These marketing advisers know that some people just cannot say no when theyre put on the spot to do something. Its kind of like how the pharmacy will text and say that your prescriptions is filled a week after you got your previous one. They know that some people will go on autopilot and buy the prescription as many times as theyre allowed to.

I will tip for take out because somebodys got to cook it and a server has to make sure that everything is in there. In theory, a server has to do the same amount of work in a take-out order.

I've never seen that outside of a sit down restaurant with actual wait staff. The tip option on debit or iPad payments is even at coffee shops where the staff never leave the counter.
