Full price paid by health insurance or your pocket if you're not covered was $80,000 for the 8-12 week cure. There are licensed generics you can get for $200, though.

Unfortunately these companies have to make a profit to come up with the next cure (Gilead's stock dividend is probably the grossest part) So until the government owns/controls these companies, they're going to have to continue price gouging health insurance companies to pay for R&D and profit to shareholders. But even with this truth, cures clearly aren't "hid." Things aren't that dire yet.

Because we have people who see HIV as a curse on homosexuals from God and the last thing they want is a cure.

So in the World of Darkness RPGs (Vampire the Masquerade etc) Vampirism is a curse handed down from God to Cain (aka the same one who killed Abel), and all vampires are descended from Cain.

In the same universe are mages--kind of like Charmed, or less conventionally characters like Neo (The Matrix). Mage powers go from 1 to 10 in a certain domain (e.g. matter, time, etc), where 1 is basically just "detect" powers, 5 is you can make nukes, and 10 is practically omnipotence. Anyway, there was a huge argument, long running in the fandom about whether or not a mage can "cure" a vampire back into a human. This was eventually settled in one of the books, where they said "In theory, here's what you need." and the highest requirement was a 6, out of reach of most characters but not completely. And then it went on to say, "But like all other countermagic, you have to get more successes than the person who put it there in the first place which means you have to get more successes than God."

Well, today, I'm proud to announced that us mortals finally got more successes than God.
