What were they doing there in the first place?

when i was living in south korea, i had an Australian friend. before he went home he decided to visit north korea too. everyone told him it was a dumb, stupid idea. but he insisted.

i later saw him and he said it was the worst experience of his life. they took his passport away, they fed him lies about the war and their government and other brainwashing, and he got food poisoning off their horrible food and was sick the entire time.

he did smuggle some north korean money and gave it to me. taking money out of their country is very illegal.

That's... quite a different story from what I've heard from people who've been there as tourists. They've said it was strange, but not dodgy.

Mind you, how they are with tourists probably changes on a weekly basis...

he told me that during the bus tours, the tour guide said that america attacked north korea unprovoked, and got really worked up about how terrible the americans were.

then she went on a rant about the japanese... which i guess south koreans do too lol.

It's pretty common knowledge that that's what North Korea claims in general, but the people I know didn't mention it being overly strongly pushed towards them, and overall said they enjoyed their trip, so I assume it can't have been overly bad.

Also, these people were American, not just Australian.
