The NSMB games were alright but could have been better. The power-ups were all somewhat boring. The Yoshi's Island series is pretty good but doesn't count since it's so different.

I mean it wouldn't be that hard. Just take all the power-ups from SMB3 and SMW, add a few new ones and give us a bunch of new levels. That's it, man. Why hasn't this happened yet?

That's the thing, though. No innovation is even necessary. Just take all the good things in 2D Marios up to this point and put them in one huge game.

Tbh this was one of the things I hated about the NSMB series. They dumped power-ups from game to game just like they did from SMB3 to SMW.

mario maker is pretty goood

I also had a lot of fun with nsmbwii but I think a lot of that is just because anything is fun with 4 people chaotically trying to finish a level while not accidentally killing each other

that would so amazing if they did that.

Mario Maker 3DS was pretty good and had a bit of what I'm talking about here. The focus was way more on challenge than fun though.

I definitely feel like there should've been a Super Mario World 2. And I don't mean Yoshi's Island. That game is great, but you might as well stick Mario in the background of Donkey Kong Country and call that a Mario World game. Its not a sequel.

With all of the advancements which took place in the 90s, it would've been amazing to have seen a late era Super Nintendo game in the same vein as Super Mario World. Detailed character sprites, expansive backgrounds, etc. But it's a lot easier to play a Mario game than make one. Super Mario Bros. 3 was intended to be the last in a Mario trilogy, then the Super Nintendo came out. Miyamoto said in an interview that, each time they made a Mario game, the Mario team said it would be the last one. I figure they never got to the point where they felt, "You know what? We should make Super Mario 5."

There's no point today. There isn't enough of a 2D market for them to put out something the quality of Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World. It'd be a tremendous effort just to appeal to retro gamers. Any Mario ideas they have, they can put into 3D games.

Take that one level in NSMBU that looks like an oil painting, and make it an entire game
