Just three episodes into the season, and already the initial premise of the season has been messed with, now that the gang discovered the portal that Michael and Janet created. I've said this at the end of every episode of this show, but I can't imagine where else they can take the show from here.

I'm loving every bit of it, though.

i just finished the 3rd ep of s3 last night as well lol.

i agree that the pacing is fantastic; there's just enough time to explore a new concept and then things move on. keeps the show fresh because i feel like there is very little filler yet the show manages to not feel like it's all over the place.

i think if this show was made by different people eleanor would still be in the fake good place, taking good lessons from chidi every day and getting into some new hyjink each week that gets her slightly closer to being found

This is so true. They go through season-long arcs in 1-2 episodes in this show. Sometimes I get whiplash from how fast the show moves from plot to plot. In this episode alone, we went through an entire year with these characters. That is so bizarre.

The other thing that is really bizarre and novel about this show is that the main characters are pretty much going through amnesia plotlines every season, yet in no way does it feel as cliche'd and overdone as amnesia plotlines usually are.

And yes, very few shows have managed to avoid all filler. Nothing about this show feels extra, or unneeded, or just there to fill space. Everything, even the most random sight gags and easter eggs, are usually referenced again in a later episode and even has major plot implications. Like the guy Janet created and Tahani's ex and Kevin. I never expected to see them again after their one-off episodes.

yea i thought this was cool too. the show gets the characters together really quickly and has them catch up quickly, so you're never bored, and somehow manages to retain all their chemistry.

Good I have Netflix. I will put it on my list when I get home.

Just from what I read I'm reminded of that episode of the Twilight zone with that Gangster who ended up in "heaven" though on a much larger scale.

I'm kinda glad they're already changing things up again, gonna be honest, wasn't as big a fan of the "being on Earth" plotline as much.

I miss them directly interacting with Janet and Micheal.

It is a great show that's plot-heavy as the other user mentioned. Entire seasons are based on huge twists that would ruin the show for you if you watched it out of order.

Make sure to post your thoughts when you watch it as I love to see people's initial reactions. It's a show that's not like anything you've seen before.

I feel like they never managed to keep up the same level of quality after season 1 ended. Season 2 was good but none of the twists really had the same punch as the reveal that they were in the bad place

Reminds me of Prison Break. Sometimes there were twists just for the sake of having twists to the point where I rolled my eyes. Especially regarding character deaths.

I kinda thought the whole let's head to the real world for a do-over was a pretty big twist for Season 2.

What type of comedy is it? Dry? Wacky? Slapstick?

Is there a laugh track? I suppose I could check it out for myself, but I'm at work right now.

It has a good mix of dry and wacky humor, and a little bit of slapstick here and there.

No laugh track.

I'd probably call it more wacky than anything else, but in a very smart, premeditated way, if that makes any sense.

I'll second this. The show has supernatural elements (since it takes place in the afterlife), so obviously you'll see a lot of zany stuff happening to remind you that the characters are in the afterlife.

But the dialogue and plot progression is typically more of a dry, and sometimes absurdist, humor that is rooted in philosophy. One of the characters is a philosophy professor and many of the episode themes are rooted in a particular philosophical principle based on what that character is discussing in the given episode (generally trying to understand what is "good" and what is "bad"). I'd hate to call it a "smart" comedy at the risk of sounding pompous, but it does play around with these philosophical themes while throwing in the occasional slapstick humor and a little bit of lowbrow comedy here and there (particularly when dealing with Jason's character).

I mean, I guess it isn't an end-all, be-all to know the twist ahead of time. I just know that for those like me who never guessed it, that twist was pretty earth-shattering, especially with the way that Ted Dansen sold that whole scene. I think that's what really made the twist legendary.

Maybe it's because I already knew but seeing how none of the main characters were perfect I figured it was more likely an ironic hell for the four main characters then actually a heaven but I'm also looking at it from the perspective of someone who had that spoiled for him.

That said I am loving the show, I'm glad I'm watching it on Netflix as the show feels like it was made to be binge watched.

That can be good but could also be awful.

Haven't seen episode 3 yet but it seems like they're almost going at it like it's the final season. Or they have some big plan and this is just part of it.

We'll see though, not really any complaints so far and it's a favorite of mine and the wife's.

Chidi absolutely CRUSHED this episode. I mean I can't see what they are going to do going forward from here but I know they will throw at least 1 more curve ball. I do hope to see Derek and Mindy St. James at some point this season.

I first thought (and still think) that Simone is actually from the good place and is sent to watch them as an impartial observer to see if they can actually qualify for it now that this experiment is going on.
