Allegedly mismatched signature. I got caught for that and had my ballot returned in my conservative college town, shocker they were doing this at the college precinct. And yes my signature looked the same.

The people who determine what signatures match aren't required to be trained in actually matching them. It takes years of training to be able to look at two signatures made using two different types of pen and recognize that they're matches. For that matter, every ID I've ever had made me have to make a signature in a really tiny box. When not forced to sign in such a tiny space, the loops I make are proportionately larger.

Right, but courts of law used handwriting experts to give testimony on whether things were or weren't written by the same person or whether someone's signature was forged or not for a long time.

More like they were convicted because they were either pressured to take a plea deal or witnesses were paid/pressured to lie.

Signatures not matching is pretty much expected. Those who have consistently matching signatures are either calligraphy enthusiasts or skilled forgery artists. Normal people cannot do it.

No, you aren't. Said person would actually compare the style of the writing, examine where the pen was picked up during the process of writing the signature, and other things in order to determine whether the signature was likely forged or written by the same person.

People don't write their signature the exact same way. There will be slight differences in the signature every time.

So this "alleged signature mismatch" is a bit vague and likely bullshit unless they have a person actually verifying the signatures properly.

no one needs to give merit to these judgement calls

i'd call the signature mismatch vague and likely bullshit if they had an "expert" doing it too

There are legitimate ways to tell if a signature was likely forged, though, which is what a handwriting expert would be tasked with determining.

Exactly. What a stupid thing to say. Looking for things like start/stops where it's clear someone has to look at the signature again is pretty common.
