I've been a member of the Cherokee Nation since birth. 1/64th or 1/128th, can't remember. Enough to get benefits if I wanted them.

I've always had a hard time integrating that with my core identity. Seems somewhat disingenuous even though I could legitimately do it.

But at the same time, this Warren thing bothers me because I can totally place myself in her shoes and I don't understand why she's getting so much heat about it. So her percentage is low - big deal. So is mine. Seemingly the only difference is registration.

Her identifying as NA is not any less legitimate than me. The legal stuff is just BS

I'm 1/8th Cherokee but I'm a ginger with red hair and fair skin. I wouldn't pass as a Native and I'd never label myself as one just because I happened to have a great grandmother (which I never met) who was.

Honestly my step sister used to walk around and tell people she was 65% Italian when I KNEW she wasnt even half.

It pissed me off. I hate people that claim theyre something without even doing any god damned research.

I was like, no, you have one grandparent that is 100% Italian, your Dad is half, and you have, at most, 25% since your mom was like none.

I think most people don't actually know how genealogy works tbqh, and so they seize on the narrative they agree with. That's why even though Warren's DNA test presented a large range, the only number that is getting repeated is the absolute lowball part of that range. They don't even know what that number means.

Tons of different native American tribes and almost everybody in America who says they're part native American says Cherokee. Yeah that makes sense.

I got 8% on a DNA, but I don't know more than that and I'm adopted so if there is some biological ancestor that I have that was part of a tribe and through them I would qualify, I am unaware and I would probably have to apply if this was the case because I wouldn't get in by default.

Im 1/64th but not a member because my grandfather thought it was dishonorable to accept accommodations. So the immediate family has stuck by that and not applied.

Had some white trash cousins try to apply a few years ago but they were denied because they couldn't prove their lineage (couldnt afford DNA testing and my grandfather hid his memorabilia from them).

That's enough to officially join the tribe. That's what me and my sister are but our red skinned heritage has been completely bleached. She got her birth certificate and some other stuff and was accepted even though she's blond hair and blue eyed like me. They're probably a little too lenient actually lol.
