We don't have net neutrality laws here and yet we don't have problems with slowdown or censorship. We just, y'kno, move to a different ISP if one is being a c***. People doing that is well established enough by now that ISPs don't even try anything.

"More than 1"?

In the absolute worst coverage areas, we have 3. In most places, we have, like, 15 or more - and that's not including mobile networks (which is a bit more limited, we only have three physical networks plus maybe two or three more operators that piggyback off another network).

Sounds like more ISPs need to start up over there...

They can't because Comcast has more money than god and bullies the fuck out of them until they crash and go out of business. And the government doesn't do anything about it because of the aforementioned more money than god.

This, plus the fact that they actually pay off officials to prevent start up ISPs from even getting approval at all.

Here's what we're facing across the US:
https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/fcc-figure-5.jpeg

Only 3% of developed census blocks have 3 or more providers serving 25Mbps - 100Mpbs. At 100Mbps and above, there's virtually no competition anywhere.

Broadband is not a competitive market in the US. Markets don't arrive at efficient equilibria when they're not competitive, and the broadband market isn't going to become competitive by being left alone. Economies of scale have prevented Google, of all companies, from gaining any traction in the US. Google threw billions of dollars into the wind for six years straight before eventually conceding defeat.

New Zealand.

Just for major ones alone there's Spark, Vodafone, 2degrees (these first three also have physical mobile networks), Slingshot, Orcon, Voyager. Probably a couple more I've missed.

And then there's a lot of minor ones (not "literally dozens" as I first thought, it's a bit less than that upon checking); they just don't all serve the entire country (some are limited to single towns, others serve signifcant portions).

https://www.broadbandcompare.co.nz/p/nz-broadband-providers-list

And I can think of at least two that aren't listed here - in fairness, there's also one listed here that's no longer in business.

why cant the internet be treated like any other utility

imagine if your power company said "your current plan only entitles you to turn on the light. buy our premium package to connect your laptop charger, and our other plan to connect your fridge"

and then because its not regulated, you just get random blackouts at all hours of the day, specifically peak hour. also your water isn't filtered and comes with mud.

This is coming from the same people who charge $2 for a episode of The Twilight Zone. They put most of a movie series out and then make you pay for the second one or something. They charge $3 for episodes of things that aired more than five years ago.

Comcast is basically micro transactions. Most of the best old movies are not free. If I pay my cable bill, the only movie or TV show I should have to pay for is something in theaters or on a network that I dont pay for.

He's right and you're not even American so kindly stfu.

I literally linked him to a list of our ISPs - one that isnt' even a complete list and already has more than 15 listed. (To be fair, as I mentioned, it has one that's no longer operating. But I can think of at least two that aren't listed.)

He hasn't acknowledged it yet.
