Me: Hey can we do [thing that takes 20 minutes] on wednesday?
Dev: hmmmm.......
Me: I had a look at the calendar and through the project timeline, should be fine time-wise. You appear to have a 4 hour time slot according to that. I was just wanting to check in case you had anything else planned?
Dev: Hmmmm not sure. Umm, it's just...well we're really busy. Hmmmmmm
Me: Well it is pretty critical, but I appreciate after last time you wanted at least a day's notice, so I'm giving you 2.
Dev: *Angry now and furiously trying to think up a reason to not have to do it* I don't know. It's probably not going to work then. Why are we doing it anyway? What's the point? I just...I don't
Me: It's within our SLA to do so for this client. But ok, can you suggest a time then that works for you? [way more reasonably response than he deserved]
Dev: Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Every fucking time

sounds to me like he should get fired. a dev that doesn't want to code? unless it's way out of his specialty that it would take him a long time to research even how to do it then there shouldn't be a reason for him not to work. i would give him the assignment, follow up if/when he doesn't finish on time, and document everything. repeat until his next evaluation then push to have him transferred or terminated

Has been discussed more than once. He's a junior dev, barely out of his training wheels. Guy has no speciality but somehow thinks he's Mark Zuckerberg or something with the clout to pick and choose which projects he's worthy of. Annoys the ever loving shit out of me.

Trouble is this is his only ever job and the CEO has a massive soft spot for him because he's the son of a friend or something. Honestly I think being fired would be the best thing to happen to him.

do you do pair programming at your work? wondering if pairing him with someone experienced would kick start something

We're at the stage now where we're weaning him off the teat, so to speak. He's been leaching off another guy for too long as an apprentice but recently we've kind of noticed that...we're not entirely sure what he actually does day-to-day.
