Lying about your shit almost certainly fucks you when it comes to white collar jobs. It almost never causes a problem if you're blue collar.

I always heard they can see your previous employers in a background check through your SSN. Don't know if it's true, though.

Depending on the company they may run a background check with a reputable firm that does this and find out that you are not being honest, in which case you will be fired.

Yes. They sometimes call your previous employer or reference during your interview. Sometimes you are interviewed by a regional manager instead of your employer. Also your background check shows all the previous places you worked and your level of education so there's not really a point in lying.

If they do a background check or request references, they'll know you're lying.

I like how my background check has my name and address as my previous employer and it overlaps basically all other jobs because I've always filed taxes this way and worked for myself to some extent- even if it was just on the side for specific periods in my life.

It's 2018, you're not going to get away with lying about work experience unless you done community service/volunteer work. Even community service has you signing papers so your city will know how many hours you served.

Community service counts? I have 100s of hour from back when I was with the Boy Scouts.

Yeah I think them checked past work history and references is done only for jobs that pay 20+ an hour. If you're going to work some labor job you're not going to have to worry about that.
