I would agree with some kind of combination of wrestling / jiu jitsu provided that you are up against one assailant. Any more than one and those are all useless as there are no rules on the street and they're not just going to stand there and let you use your skills. Get yourself a stun gun.

Wing Chun but good luck finding a legit school. Many are snake oil that ignore the shortcomings of the art and tout it as the best.

If you put the question in the topic title you'll catch the attention of people who are interested in the subject. I mean obviously having a gun or just being armed would be the best option but I think boxing is the second best. A lot of people that pick fights seem to want to fist fight.

I understand how internet communication works. The topic title was a creative choice. It wasnt me being too timid to ask; I was poking fun at the fact that this probably isnt the best place to inquire about a topic like this, and thats simply how I chose to open.

I think it depends a lot on the person

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Aikido are good. pretty much any martial art really

but the big deal with most martial arts is how to avoid conflict in the first place

The most practical and effective is a gun bar none, fist fighting is assuming your one vs one, they do not have a weapon, they believe in fighting fair.

When your on the street and your life is on the line or your loved ones you need a firearm to actually be safe.

muay thai if you absolutely feel the need to learn to protect yourself with just your own fists (well, elbows and knees...). helps you build up pain tolerance, and teaches you how to throw devastating strikes.

but to be honest, you're pretty much already fucked if you're getting into a fist fight. learning to use a gun and getting a carry permit is a good idea. but hell i'd say one of the best close range defenses is pepper spray. you can miss with a gun or tazer, and hell even when you hit with a tazer sometimes it doesn't work and some people are even resistant to it. but pepper spray, you've got plenty of use out of even a little can and i've yet to hear of someone getting blasted in the face with it and not immediately stopping what they were doing.

As many have stated: running.

Most people aren't in good cardio condition so running just a block or so away will wear them down to the point where if they did catch you they aren't much of a threat. The best is it works just as well on multiple attackers.

If you feel like they'll catch you, I have found running into traffic works. I trust my ability to dodge cars to be better than three other dudes ability. Also, it's more likely a driver will call the police because you're in their way. On the other end you have just upped the stakes and you could be seriously injured.

Going for the legs will surprise a lot of people.

Use your fist against soft surfaces (stomach, etc.), and your palm against hard surfaces (head, etc.)
