When someone disagrees with the umpires, why do they kick dirt? Seems like a cliche and make it seem fake, imo

I get that, but why the kicking of the dirt? Many ways to assert dominance, why the dirt over and over?

It stems from the fact that they can't physically touch an umpire so instead they start kicking dirt at the umpire's feet. It's not something you see a whole lot anymore though. It was way more common years ago.

I guess, I don't watch baseball

But I've been watching YouTube clips and when a player or coach disagree with someone, they always kick dirt at the ump

It's a cliche, IMO

I get that, but the kicking of the dirt seems to be a trademark of some sort. Like someone did it before, got famous, and other go to copy them

I don't know the origin, but it's something that's happened throughout baseball history. This is dating back all the way to the 1800s. It likely started with some manager or player doing it and others just picked up on it and it just went from there.
