Some tidbits

Most members of the exhausted majority, and then some, dislike political correctness. Among the general population, a full 80 percent believe that political correctness is a problem in our country. Even young people are uncomfortable with it, including 74 percent ages 24 to 29, and 79 percent under age 24. On this particular issue, the woke are in a clear minority across all ages.

Political tribeas defined by the authorsis an even better predictor of views on political correctness. Among devoted conservatives, 97 percent believe that political correctness is a problem. Among traditional liberals, 61 percent do. Progressive activists are the only group that strongly backs political correctness: Only 30 percent see it as a problem.

Here's the problem with people who use the phrase "shithole country": they use it to mean that anyone who comes from a "shithole country" is, by definition, subhuman shit. Not that they're struggling under extremely difficult conditions, or enduring oppression, but that they themselves are the problem.

Plenty of people are enduring hardships in America.

There are people who are starving and homeless. There are people who being beaten by abusive spouses and wonder if the next time they go home they'll never leave again. There are people who can't drink the water where they live because it's full of lead. There are people with horrible diseases that they can't get proper care for and are deteriorating slowly. All of this in just America.

Not being able to say racist shit on twitter is not a real problem.

Never heard anyone use the phrase who didn't make their opinions transparently clear about the kind of people who come from "shithole countries". Don't kid me there aren't noisy concerns about importing the "shittiness" of these countries by admitting immigrants and refugees from them, as if these people are synecdoches of the country itself.

the survey question did not define political correctness for respondents

Kind of an important takeaway.

The surveyed were pretty much asked to make their own interpretation on what they think political correctness is, and judge based on their own interpretation, rather than have PC defined for them, or for the study to take responses and grade them on a scale of what it presupposes PC is.

That's not a bad thing, though. Since people are required to make their own perceptions as it is on the reg, then it would make sense that the survey would ask the same of them.

From the couple of responses given (and it's only a couple, so it might not be representative), the concern seems to be that people are, in essence, worried they'll say the wrong thing and get in tangible trouble for it. Given how people in high positions can very publicly lose jobs or standing due to what they say, and due to the fact that a lot of what the media portrays as "PC culture" is often seen in political protest and activism, I'm not surprised that's the view they have of it.

It's an interesting read, and I think I'll look at the actual publication of the study in a bit, but not now.

The article's about political correctness, not racism. Political correctness isn't a synonym for racial harmony.

From the article itself: "If age and race do not predict support for political correctness, what does? Income and education."

And if you insist that anyone opposed to political correctness is a racist then you're condemning 80% of the general population.

They asked whether a controversial phrase is bad and then didn't define the phrase? That's not very useful. Everyone has their own interpretation of what it means. It doesn't mean they dislike the underlying value, they may just hate it when their opponents use it. For example, it's definitely political correctness to not be able to call deplorables deplorable.

I think the proper takeaway is learning what they think it is, rather than telling them what it is and wondering how they interpret that new definition they might have.

Both left and right are staring into a mirror: always highlighting the hypocrisy of the other side. Whether you're left or right, there isn't some kind of twisted virtue in accusing the other side of having the same prejudices as your own. Seems to me that's a reason for feeling instead like you've lost a bigger argument, not won the smaller one.

That's true to an extent, but it's incomplete. Someone who claims to dislike political correctness but doesn't want to be called out for being racist loves political correctness. Without defining it, it just becomes a cultural ink blot test.
