I think it is the nature of progressive liberal politics to push boundaries further and further left, compared to conservative politics which seems more about securing the status quo and traditionalism.

If that is the case, it wouldn't be surprising that people who had relatively progressive or liberal political positions years ago wouldn't qualify as that today.

It's funny because I never really hated communists or socialists. The boogeyman never really did it for me, I think Capitalism works, but I think every system warrants criticism and I think we should keep an open mind when determining what works best or for finding the truth.

I've met all types of people, even Anarchists who had semi-reasonable arguments. I didn't agree with what they were saying, but the ideas were worth challenging and thinking about.

So for me, Liberals are far, far worse than their boogeyman. These liberals who REEEEE, "literally shake" and throw tantrums in public about the dumbest shit imaginable are for more pathetic and delusional than any socialist, communist or anarchist I've ever met.

As an honest answer to your question, here are the three most common ways I see people become less liberal/see themselves as less liberal as they go from their late teens to their mid twenties or so.

1) Being liberal was just the default position in their peer group, friend group, etc. and they agreed with liberals on the more generational issues (not being anti-gay and things like that), and weren't really tested on their other beliefs so they just assumed they followed the liberal platform. Later on in life as some of those issues became more relevant, they discovered that they didn't hold the "liberal position" on them. So they feel less liberal, but it's really that the focus of issues changed from an area where they were left leaning to one where they were more centrist/right leaning.

2) They were honestly liberal, but changed their mind once one of those decisions negatively impacted them. The most common example of this is someone who gets a job with what they perceive as a high salary, and the first time they ever have to pay taxes in their life it shakes them to their core because they mentally put themselves in the category of that high salary and now their money doesn't go as far as they thought it was going to. This somewhat overlaps with people who support liberal social welfare policies until they don't need them, in which case they were never really "liberal" about it, they're just voting in their own self interest.

3) They were never really liberal at all and they just pretend that they were in the past because they think it gives their complaints more legitimacy.

I was always skeptical of third wave feminism. I remember when I was a sophomore in college, I questioned a professor in class when he taught the wage gap in class and admitted he never did the research so he redacted what he said mid-lecture.

It seems like Liberals have been playing up third wave feminism way more now than they ever have.

Like look to Bernie just 3 years ago. Guy was pro-gun. dismissed a lot of the anti-white, anti-male ideology of the left.
Now every liberal talking head whines about men, white people, guns etc. Even Bernie altered his positions.

I'm pretty sure you hit the nail on the head. It's why conservatism in general, remains a mainstay. It's balance within a civilization. A push and pull. One political party becomes the status-quo with too much power... the remedy for that sickness naturally arises if people are allowed the freedom.

yeah, pretty much. pro-gay, pro-weed, although my anti-religious stance has shaken. I'm still atheist, but I no longer believe that being religious is bad in anyway.
I'm also no longer strongly pro-choice, but I suppose I never was really. I just slurped the liberal garbage.

So many position I had were based on lies. Like when I was a kid I thought that scientists actually determined when life begins or consciousness begins. I also thought that a lot of people got abortions because they were raped. Turns out that it's like 1 percent of all abortions (if even.)

I also thought that the term mark wasn't arbitrarily picked.

I mean I thought a lot of things that I later found out were complete lies. My parents are liberal hacks, they just told me what ever MSNBC said and I believed it because I assumed my parents had done research, but they are just drones that believe what they are told in an era where you can look up any FBI statistic for yourself

I mean literally everything liberals have told me growing up were entirely lies. It makes me start to doubt how the Bush presidency actually played out. I always thought Bush was a terrible president, but I wish I could have experienced his presidency as an adult so I could have viewed events uncucked.

He probably still was garbo though
