You could go on an income based repayment plan Jen, until you made enough to start paying it back. It would take along time to pay it back mind you, but you only have to pay at most 10% of your gross income at any time. If you make under a certain amount, you pay back nothing (but of course the interest continues to accrue so you'll end up paying more long term).

again, stop acting like you know what is going on with peoples' finances. i have a consolidated loan. there are no income based repayment plans.

i'm not moving into a bedroom with roommates with a dog, a cat and a boyfriend. it's not happening. i already did math to see how much if a paycut i'm willing to take to maintain my current lifestyle. i don't need to fuckin' scrape by in order to get a different job and work at gamestop. why the hell would i do that?? and where did i even say i wanted to do that?

that would completely TANK my quality of life. i would NEVER want to live in a bedroom in someone's house.

and i don't even commute. i work 4 miles from my fucking house. why are you even talking to me about this? you're not even talking about anything that is applicable to me. all i want is to literally get a different job than mine. i don't want anything you're talking about.

wolfy i understand you like to give advice but sometimes you really shouldn't act like such an authority. you're really acting condescending right now with the smiley faces. you have no idea what my expenses are at all.

I don't need to know what your expenses are to make a general statement about how people can actually work jobs that they like and not have to spend most of their time doing something they hate. I was not actually directing my original comment just at you, but in general. I'm not trying to be condescending, and I always use smiley faces.

You are right, I don't know your expenses, but I am quite good at helping people manage them and come up with budgets. You are happy with your life (I hope) and you are spending money on things that are important to you, but I know for a fact you can go from spending a ton, to very little, if you want. You can go from having a big house that costs $1500 a month just to upkeep to renting a room that is only $500 a month (including utilities and internet), and you can drop your monthly expenses down to only $1000 a month if you want.

I know all that because in the last 6 months I did exactly that. I now spend less then $1000 a month. I still have 3 large TV's (one I put in the living room for roomates, 2 in my bedroom (one for my monitor, the other to watch tv/game on). I have a bed, a few shelves full of stuff (alot of games), a ton of books in one of the living rooms and a few other pieces of furniture.

This isn't an attack, it's literally me trying to tell people they don't need to work jobs they hate, and that they can get by spending less money and be far happier. I have done exactly that, so I know what I am talking about.

It doesn't mean EVERYONE can do that though, you might not be able to be happy without your stuff, or renting a room etc. The point is to be happy though and I know many people who are working jobs they don't like just to pay for things they don't really enjoy or need.

My post is for them.

i literally can't.

i already outlined that my bare minimum expenses without housing are $1200 a month.

unless you expect me to default on everything i have.

So much hatred.

But yeah, it's legit annoying when they don't. It can sound like a good job, you're a good fit, and they start the offer at 35k when you're expecting 60k. Just wastes everyone's time.

If you are sharing the cost of where you live with your BF, then you basically already have a roomate. I never said it had to be with strangers. Even with just 2 people, if you rent a apartment for $1200 a month that is $600 each, not much more. If you wanted to save more you could get a friend to move into another room (a 2 bedroom apartment), and split the rent and save even more (or better yet another couple). Not something you need or want to do, I get that, just saying you could do it.

Living with someone is a great way to save money, living in the same bedroom as them can save even more. The more people live in a place, the cheaper it is for everyone. Many people spend $1500+ a month on rent currently.....because they live alone.

I was doing that myself recently, and it was a serious waste of money.

seriously. why would i want to move out of my condo into a bedroom for no reason, default on my financial obligations, get my car repoed and work at gamestop just so my expenses will be less than $1k a month?

Jen, you do you. Live how you want. Work towards being a Librarian, that sounds like a great goal, and something that will make you happy. Everyone is different and has different needs.

Could you change your life to live on less? Sure. You certainly don't have to, and honestly most people are trying to get more things, live in more expensive places etc, not do the opposite.

I do think there are many, many people who would be happier spending less and working a job they actually like, but......probably not many of them are even reading PoTD, let alone this thread lol.

Most people probably can. But it doesn't mean they'd be happy. She could spend less by just not paying bills, but that probably wouldn't be good...

That's just you assuming. If I made less money, I would not be happier. I would actually be the opposite.

You can't based this on just you. You have a different lifestyle and like different things. And have lived a different life. I think you were happy when you were homeless, IIRC. But not everyone can be homeless and happy. You also grew up in a different time...

wolfy42 posted...
I know many people who are working jobs they don't like just to pay for things they don't really enjoy or need.

I feel like this is just assuming again. I know plenty of people who hate their jobs, but like that they can use the money to buy things they enjoy or need. I'd rather work a job that is probably not my favorite to make enough money to live and buy things that can help make me have a happier life, rather than change my whole life, possibly lose stuff, work a job that I love(and will probably start to hate because it's work), and make just enough to scrape by(while probably not having enough to buy things I like i.e. games), and always be stressed because of money.

wolfy42 posted...

Some may, some may not. I would say closer to half and half. But I honeslty think less than half would be happier living how you say, especially since it probably won't even work out the same way for them...

And I'm not trying to attack you, Wolfy. I actually like you. It's just that you can't always act like you know everything. And it seems like you do that sometimes. You have to remember that everyone is different. Just because you can be happy a certain way doesn't mean everyone can do the same thing. Or that because things worked out for a good number of friends that things will always work out for us the same way. Just because you can find us a cheap place in our area doesn't always mean much. Most of us can, too. But we didn't like the living arrangament or situation or whatever. Most people don't want to take a paycut to work another job that they may like a little better. Most people are content where they are. I know lots of people who hate their jobs, but love the people they work with. And, sometimes, you move to a job you would like better, but hate the people. And that could make all the difference. Just remember that we're all different and can't follow the same exact path. Sometimes, our paths won't even be similar. Or can't be... That's all...
