CE should watch and will probably like and understand:

Ingmar Bergman
Lars von Trier
David Lynch
Stuff from Hammer Horror
Jaco van Dormael

CE should watch but will likely struggle with:

Hollis Frampton

I wish someone had told me about this kinda stuff a long time ago, Sadly, it was only 5 years ago I started to become a film buff, in 2013. There are so many things people would probably enjoy, but simply have never been exposed to. And then, there's stuff worth watching, just to try.

A lot of people know Twin Peaks, but still have never heard or seen the name David Lynch...which is strange, because I'm pretty sure it comes up at the beginning of every episode of Twin Peaks. That's the general public for you.

Also, I doubt they've seen ANY of his films.

What's wrong with von Trier? His films are intelligent, very depressing, and sometimes experiemental. Sounds good to be. Oh, and he's got a new film out at the end of this year, The House That Jack Built.

Id bet money Aronofskys films are more well-known than Lynchs these days

But I think David Lynchs name goes down as more of a "legend" than Aronofskys

Anyone who hasn't heard of those should leave their hole in the marshes and move into civilisation. Or alternatively watch something else than just Avengers 12.

Andrei Tarkovsky
Pavel Loungine
Henri Verneuil (I know, a biggie too but then again I'm talking to Muricans)

Have you seen TC's list he had David Lynch and Ingmar Bergman. Ingmar Bergman is on par with the three I mentioned and David Lynch is pretty well known.

Every Scandinavian knows about Ingmar Bergman and Lars von Trier.
Go read some August Strindberg if you want to see what inspired Bergman.

I know. It's just that the 3 you mentioned are really big. Like, MASSIVE. They built cinema. Sure Bergman too (maybe Lynch too a bit), but they aren't on the same level. Either way, pretty much ALL the directors mentioned are high end BIGGIES, someone who hasn't heard of them should etc etc.

And PLEASE, PEOPLE. Stop pulling out the Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Luc Besson, or Gaspard No card, as a respectable French person, I cannot stand those pretentious entitled bozos and their films aren't GOOD. Besson had its golden days, but they are WAY behind him, now he's trying to be Spielberg, minus the talent. Jeunet just makes the same film over and over, and No plain sucks (imho). Putting any of those 3 (there are more actually, thankfully you haven't heard of them lol) next to Truffault, Verneuil or Melville is insulting :(

Here's another MASSIVE one oblivious millenials have certainly not heard of, and this one is one of yours : Sam Peckinpah. Go watch The Getaway right now !
