Cause Republicans actually bother to go out and vote for their party while most Democrats only talk s*** online, but never do anything about it.

I'm 99% positive if voting becomes mandatory, the Democrats would win every election every time.

Even if it becomes mandatory, Republicans are slated to expand gerrymandering and what they're allowed to get away with, and they'll basically ensure that the minority within each state can secure positions for Republicans in the senate. And as such, they'll expand their power despite representing a minority of the country.

But that's what happens when you live in a country that explicitly governs by giving small states as much voting power as larger states for senatorial purposes and when you give small states proportionately more power per citizen in presidential elections.

The entire system is inherently designed to benefit the minority and allow them to govern as they desire. So it's not that the system is broken, it's that it's always been easily manipulated.

This has always seemed extremely stupid to me.

It's even more absurd nowadays since the most heavily populated states are also the ones that generate far more money, trade, taxes, etc. per capita.

It bears repeating that the highest power per vote is not concentrated in small states, where the winner-take-all system makes the victor clear from the start, but in large states with politically divided populations, such as Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, as a consequence of the winner-take-all system.

Even though our electoral system DOES favor small states by counting their senators as EVs, a proportional distribution system would almost always produce a result that matched that of the popular vote.

It's the winner-take-all approach of the electoral college that is broken.

This.

And if the economy collapses between here and 2020 it will 100% be blamed on democrats taking the house.

Some people in this country really think land matters more than population size

"If we go to a popular vote, the big cities will dominate!"

Ok...and? If the majority of the country resides in specific places, then so what?

I wouldn't doubt that most people are Democrats in public but vote Republican.

When you're a Democrat you get to advocate for a Utopia but when you get in the booth you realize how unlikely this is and vote with logic

Im not convinced Republicans will win the midterms. They might, but historically the party of the president loses in the midterms. I think its been over 50 years since the party of the president has won in the midterms? Though Im not sure on that statistic.

Many Democrats are certainly charged up about this election. They were literally clawing at the gates of the Supreme Court like a scene from the Walking Dead.

If Democrats have that much fervor at the polls, and I imagine they will, I dont think that Republicans will come away the winners.

Only 3 times in recent history has the incumbent party won in the midterms

FDR's first midterm
The midterm after the whole Lewinsky Scandal
Bush's first midterm after 9/11

They'll definitely win the House and most of the Governor houses up for election

Senate is a tossup IMO

dems are just really good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

and their senate schedule this year is just really tough.

You wind up with a tyranny of the majority, which is what our system was supposed to discourage. The idea that whats best for our urban centers and the greatest number of people is whats best for us as a whole is very utilitarian.

tyranny of the majority is mitigated by our system of checks and balances

it's not supposed to be mitigated by the system that elects our chief executive

granted, the original system was even less democratic than what we have now.
