I never knew they were different until I bought the super nintendo cart recently expecting the genesis game.

The SNES version is garbage compared the the genesis classic.

Seriously the genesis version of Alladin is probably the best movie licensed game ever made imo

I literally got this game for my birthday in 1993 or 1994. Not that long after(same year or later?), I remember watching OJ Simpson in the White Bronco on the same TV.

I like Genesis more for nostalgia, but the SNES one has some hecka fun platforming and the genie levels are infinitely better. Plus Show you the world bonus stage.

I never got the sword argument. Aladdin has a sword in ONE SCENE. And it's not even his sword. He lifts it from Jaffar.

I think the two games compliment one another nicely. Each possesses something the other game lacks. The SNES game follows the story whereas the Sega game simply uses locations from the movie as backdrops. And Aladdin's acrobatic approach is more in-character than slashing away at everyone with a sword. On the flip side, the animation in the Sega version is top notch and the gameplay is much more fluid.

There's also a matter of boss fights. The bosses on the Sega version aren't nearly as fun, but they're far more numerous. The SNES version only has three boss fights and there's really no excuse for that. Even fighting a pallet swap of the first boss would've been better than having a parsley three boss fights. That being said, the last boss fight is far more satisfying on the Super Nintendo.

Both are good. I'm willing to give Sega a slight edge mostly due to the animation (which was famously done by the Disney animators themselves), but I think both are fun in their own right and well worth playing if you have both consoles.

Yeah this was one of those games that was a lot better on Genesis. I remember Jurassic Park being a lot better on SNES.

Robocop vs Terminator, Mortal Kombat 1 & 2 were both worlds better on Genesis.

Mortal Kombat 1 was better on Genesis. The Super Nintendo version... I don't know why they even bothered to make one. It's like nonalcoholic beer. What's the point?

MK2 was better on the Super Nintendo though. Even the programmers said it was the definitive home console version.

Same was true, one way or the other - it's debatable which - for Lemmings.

SNES version was very true to the original Amiga version. One level was replaced with a new one, and five bonus levels were added. Mechanics were pretty much the same.

Genesis also implemented the gameplay mechanics perfectly too, with one major exception: levels couldn't be more than 512px wide. A lot of the levels in the other versions were wider than this, so most wider levels were replaced with new levels (a few were cut down to fit). But the new levels tended to be really, REALLY good. On top of that, they then added 60 more bonus levels. (Of these additional levels, five of the six non-standard levels from the SNES version were included here too. A very small number - perhaps another 5 or so - were not truly new levels, but rather were levels from Oh No! More Lemming! remade in Lemmings 1 tilesets.) These 60 were of mixed quality, ranging from "meh" to "among the best official levels on any platform".

(On a technical level though, the Master System port is downright amazing. But in terms of the end-user experience, it's average - definitely better than any other 8-bit system handled it, but still far from perfect.)

It's only better because you get the sword in the Genesis version LMAO.

But naw they purposely made the SNES version hard as fuck for some reason. At the time there was this stigma that Genesis was for adults and SNES were for kids and that is why Aladdin got the sword in Genesis and did not in the SNES

The lack of tightness in the controls and the weird hitboxes made the Sega version inferior. The level designs were also pretty boring. The Nintendo version had way better platforming and controls.

It's weird that they're two totally different games

Disney sold the licensing rights for each console separately. Capcom got the SNES and Virgin Interaction got Genesis.

I think this was a common thing back then and happened with a lot of other licensed games like Looney Toons.

Also from what I'm reading, many developers had different teams internally for different platforms so that would explain other games.

Only truly played the SNES version. Liked it a lot.

The Genesis version, didn't actually play it on a Genesis, but a PC port of it(only two guys in the neighborhood who had a Genesis, one only played Sonic and Tiny Toons games while the other only played Primal Rage and some kind of Godzilla-ish game where you played as kaiju beating up other kaiju by picking up police cars as weapons) many, many years ago, and only briefly. I remember thinking 'wow, this is not fun, why didn't they just have the same game as the SNES?', plus I didn't like the fact that Aladdin was running around with a sword.

Granted, I realize I was unfair in my assessment. I was young, only played the first level and didn't give the game a proper chance. I should properly play it sometime.

Disney licensed properties were typically the same on both systems though. Disney's contract with Capcom just happened to be ending, so Sega got a completely different game.
