If my 4G connection goes out and it switches to 3G, it takes like 5 minutes just to load Google's hompage. Shouldn't 3G internet be faster than dial-up at least in theory?

4G in the US (different from 4G LTE) is just code name for HSPA+ which if I'm not wrong about is just an improved version of 3G. Locally I get 10mbps on it. I haven't been on a legit 3G band in a long time, at least not how it was defined upon release. Most of those were upgraded.

My speed tests back when 3g was still a thing was that the speeds were about the same as 1.5 Mbps ADSL

That's much faster than dial up but still excruciatingly slow.

My phone has 4G LTE right, but when the signal drops below 1 bar it switches to 3G and it always says the signal is full, but that mode just straight up is unusable.

"4G" is Wi-Max which is basically cell towers with microwaves

LTE is a totally different thing but the speeds are about the same.

Qualcomm torpedoed Wi-Max to death by using contract leverage over apple to refuse to adopt it for iPhones in favor of LTE. Guess who makes a lot of LTE antennas...

That's interesting. I'm on AT&T and my options are basically

4G LTE
4G (code for HSPA+ or 3G improved)
EDGE

Just checked and there's no actual option for 3G as a network preference anymore.

I take it Wi-Max didn't mess with regular WiFi bands? Interesting.

Usually when there's an event or a lot of people around here I need to jump on 4G to get service, the LTE will be the first to take a hit.

if you are using android, dial *#*#4636#*#* to access the phone setting, and set it to 4G only. that way even with low signal it won't switch to 3G.
*might not available to some providers and brands.

Cool, thanks I'll find out.

Edit: that didn't work. It brings up a menu that says phone information, battery information usage statistics and Wi-Fi information. The phone information tab just brings up a screen that says it's not available with my device. The Wi-Fi tab has menu options that are available but none of them have anything to do with my phone's normal internet connection just wi-fi.

It probably does in some way but it uses different frequencies and channels to avoid collision.

I think the HSPA+ is just a more advanced 3G

They slow it down because otherwise you'd have no incentive to pay more money to upgrade

That doesn't make any sense though because I don't think they offer a 3G only plan at all.

Well that's even worse then

Now it's either pay more or get NO service, as opposed to pay more or get at least a little service
