before bed i have started putting my laptop in its box on a grounded level in case the kitten knocks it over because yesterday he made it slide from jumping from it. most nights i put it in sleep mode when i'm done, so i put it in its box on the floor to be safe, my concern though was while its in a sleep mode state if the fans run at all, wouldn't want it to over heat.

not sure if model matters, like if some laptops do this or don't but mines an asus.

Actually, I would like to know, too. I have an Asus, as well. And I use sleep mode quite often.

A lot of the time newer ones do not, or run very slowly, as their cooling systems release radiant heat very well, and cpus drop to super low power when not being utilized.

That being said, almost all systems will just simply shut down in case of any overheat. If its not on the next morning it may have done so.

Edit: However if youre putting in a box or case, shut it off. Even with fans running the trapped heat can still cause a problem.

i think its a 2012-2014 model, i've had it new in my closet for a few years. opened it up very early on this year.

do you think the fans run in sleep mode? when i close the lid i don't feel any air pushing out in the vents. my concern is if it goes through activation cycles that i'm unsure about where it might have like a light power on, since some devices do that.

Why not just shut it off?

If you dont feel airflow, then most likely its only taking enough power to wait for a wake up signal. It wont output too much heat. But I wouldnt put it in a case or a box overnight while in sleep mode regardless.

sleep mode is just convenient to return back to where you last left off. shutting down means awhile wait to use it again the next day. takes a few minutes before reaching the desktop, and then a few more minutes to wait on the desktop for your device to come alive enough to start using it and then searching down everything again that you were on. sleep mode kinda just brings you back immediately to everything you left off on doing.

Do you need it the second you wake up? Can't turn it on then go do a few morning duties?

That being said, you can leave it in sleep mode, just don't put it in a box.

not exactly, but for the sake of convenience and i might have left off on something i wanted to return back to. but wont put it in the box on sleep mode anymore, i'll either shut it down or...

i wish i could think of a safe spot in my room to put it whilst it gets air room but nothing comes to mind. with how my room is i could put it on top of the ps4 but not sure if putting the laptop on top of it would cause the ps4 in rest mode to over heat since that system runs warm in sleep mode.
