So my computer is starting up to a black screen and the mouse cursor is visible, and I can move it around

I can at least access task manager while in black screen mode but yea, can't do anything else

Hopefully that means its not entirely dead and salvable

Please help me

Sounds like your windows 10 is acting up.

Try when youre in the task manager to run explorer.exe from file > run new task.

That's for a laptop

I've been googling solutions but they're all for laptops

"Option 1

Get an external monitor"

Don't have one

"Option 2

Hit shift to access sticky keys

Hit ease of access center"

It's not giving me that option

"Being up task manager and select run task"

It doesn't do anything, it actually causes task manager to x out

Also, I just need to make it clear I do not want to reset my computer because I have too much valuable stuff on here. Any solutions where I don't erase everything are welcome

What happens when you boot into safe mode?

You literally said you can get into the task manager. If you can see the task manager then you can do what I said.

Does hitting Windows key + i bring anything up? If it does you can use that to get in to safe mode. You'd go Update and Security -> Recovery -> Advanced Startup -> Restart Now. Then, once it starts you in to the advanced startup menu, you go Troubleshoot -> Advanced options -> Startup Settings -> Restart. From there you should be able to boot into safe mode.

If booting into safe mode allows you more freedom then we've suddenly got a very clear idea of what's happening... if not then you might have some more serious problems.

Okay, and I'm assuming based on what you said that you don't even have a start bar, correct?

In that case the only real way to get into safe mode (that doesn't require tools you have no access to atm) is to interrupt Windows' boot process three times. Turn your computer off, then turn it on three times and then shut it off before Windows can properly boot each time. On the fourth boot, Windows will automatically go into a repair menu, from which you can go to Advanced Options and boot into safe mode.

If booting into safe mode fixes your problem then we've suddenly got a very good idea of what's causing your issue. If not, then you might have some more serious problems.

Okay so I don't know if it's actually in safe mode but it's actually working now. It took about 5 or so minutes to get past the welcome screen but once it did, the desktop showed up. I can access the internet and other files. I think I'm going to back everything up right now so I'll have to go buy a 1 terabyte hard drive or something.

So anybody have any guesses why interrupting the startup three times in a row actually helped it?

Well, it sounds like you didn't actually boot into safe mode so it's pretty hard to say. (Safe mode is very obvious, it's an all-black desktop with "safe mode" prominently displayed in the upper right.)

My early guesses would mostly involve start-up processes that are fucking with your computer, but dying hardware is also a pretty realistic scenario. In either event backing up your stuff while you've got it working is a smart idea. That way if it happens again you can handle it without worrying about losing anything important.

Always back up your stuff though. If factory resetting your computer isn't an option then you sure are not going to be better off when it dies completely.

Yeah, you're going to need a external hard drive. Any cloud backup service will cost you a lot for over 50GB.

You can change what processes turn on when you start Windows 10 via the Task Manager. For 7, type "msconfig" in the search bar. Go through it once and disable anything you never use. Go through it a second time and get rid of programs you don't use immediately. If you don't know what it is, leave it for now - it might be your audio driver for all you know!

After that, it should only have the necessary Windows programs and whatever the first few things you turn on usually are. Should start up quicker. But if it takes 5 minutes, your hard drive is definitely slowing down.
