The idea of forcing companies to be more accountable for their shitty marketing tactics is a good one, in theory.

But they're still doing that, the only difference is now I need to answer a pop up on every website I go to.

This is actually one of the better examples because at least I can disagree in one click. Most of them force you to go into some annoying user settings just to make it as cumbersome as possible.

Imagine being asked to change your settings any time you follow any link.

Not that it matters. As soon as you clear your cookies you are back to square one.

Even worse, a lot of American websites just don't bother anymore. I get this kind of thing a lot now:

From a commercial standpoint, companies are scrambling to figure out how to hold onto data and get around these measures. Sure, a lot of marketing agencies are struggling now. For the most part though companies are just a lot more savvy about how they collect information about you. The whole thing has been an enormous expense for everyone. Even your local "mom & pop" coffee house has to worry about their GDPR accountability now. Imagine running a cafe and having to worry about the exact way you encourage people to like and subscribe.

I think @FLUFFYGERM would call this a classic case of bureaucratic overreach making people's lives worse, and for once I completely agree with him.

lol

yes the UK is still in the EU and will be for a long time

When it does leave the UK will have more oppressive online regulation, not less

^ Hey now that's completely unfair.

Keep in mind that GDPR affects a lot more than just this.

I have some good to say about it. Now if you want to find out what a company has on it you can request it and they are obligated to provide you everything they have. You can also demand they scrub you from their database (unless you have outstanding obligations to be on it) and they will have to do so.

I'm not sure some admittedly irritating annoyances a few months after it came into force constitute it being a failure
