Could be any game. But especially in games like Smash and Mario Kart where they have big, fun rosters, and there's that one friend that always plays as Toad every. single. time. no matter what. It's such a waste lol.

Eh, I see your point, but some people may just really like a character, or prefer how they play over all others. If someone only really knew Pikachu in Smash, itd make sense they gravitate towards Pikachu.

Toad and Mario are my two picks in Mario Kart every time it's a race. I can only stand using a heavyweight if it's battle mode.

I swap it up in fighters but typically have a male main and a female main.

If I'm playing to win, then I'm gonna use my "best" character every time.

This is especially problematic in fighting games, where the time investment to learn one character's combos and mechanics has to be split with learning how to play against the rest of the cast. If you're an anime fighter you get to add a bunch of stuff on top of that, like longer, more execution heavy combos, weight specific combos, and generally more mechanics.

And there's the question of the games longevity to consider. How lively is the competitive scene? How diverse is it in terms of competitively viable characters? Will the time I spend learning this game be wasted in a year when interest wanes? What do I do if a particularly problematic balance patch drops and I'm forced to largely relearn my character or drop them entirely because they've lost a step on the playing field? There's a lot to think about here that largely discourages players from exploring the roster much, at least at intermediate levels. Ultimately you will need to learn how players use their other characters, if for no reason other than matchup knowledge.

I couldn't do it. I mean I have go tos but I love diversity. I dabbled in every weapon but 2 or 3 in Monster Hunter World. Warframe always has me jumping into different frames too lol

I think in Smash Bros is where it bothers me the most. Like, the devs spent years and millions of dollars creating this roster of like 50+ characters, and then there's people like my cousin who but the game just to exclusively play Samus lol.

Like I said, it just seems like a waste to me. Why buy new versions of the game at that point if you could just play as Samus over and over in Melee or something lol.

I have a "friend" who exclusively plays orange sportsbra Zero-Suit Samus in Smash. And he's fucking terrible, despite playing her every match ever.
