Both are great movies, but it's just something about Casino that I find it to be more appealing than Goodfellas. I also found Nicky Santoro to be more interesting than Tommy DeVito.

Casino has a better ability to keep you "into" the movie, but it's not as rewatchable as Goodfellas. Goodfellas never gets old.

Yeah, she played that role really well. The love story was much more interesting than the love story in Goodfellas, imo.

Casino is one of if not my favorite movie. I like it more than Goodfellas cause it's different. We've seen plenty of rags to riches NYC mob movies, but not many about the various Mid-West mobs' control of the casinos. The 70's/80's Las Vegas setting is also more visually appealing than dark and grungy New York. There's some beautiful looking scenes in Casino.

Robert DeNiro plays a slightly different character than his previous tough guy gangsters. Now he's an outsider to the mob and is caught between Nicky and the bosses. Joe Pesci is even better as Nick Santoro than Tommy Devito. He's also almost a dead ringer for the real life version too instead of being wildly different than the real Tommy, but funny enough DeNiro looked pretty close to the real life Jimmy, but is a lot different than the real Ace.

Sharon Stone as Ginger is a character you love to hate and she played her deranged, psycho, despicable character wonderfully.

Then there's the side characters who are great even if they're relatively small parts like Don Rickles as Billy, James Woods as Lester, or even Joe Bob Briggs as the dopey slots manager.

I think ultimately, while it's very similar to Goodfellas, Casino is different enough that it's more watchable to me. Now that I think about it, it's funnier also which also helps the replay value.

And while we're on the subject, why did the mob let Ace live? They attempted to kill him via a car bomb, failed, and then didn't make any attempts to kill him again?

He made them so much money. That's ultimately what the mob cares about. It's implied that it was Nicky who really put the bomb there.

In real life it was one of the bosses that did it. He blamed Frank Rosenthal (Ace) for a lot of the heat coming down on them cause Frank would go on TV and make a big ruckus over his gaming license, if I remember right.

This is a super unpopular opinion, but I'm not really a fan of either. That said, I still prefer Goodfellas because I hate pretty much all the characters in Casino.

Yeah, I was just about to edit my previous post to include it. Ace has a voice over that says something like :

"The bombing was never authorized, but I suspect I knew who lit the fuse and so did the powers that be..."

Cut to the cornfield scene.

So was Nicky killed because he (presumably) killed Ace?

Nicky put his feelings before business -- the bosses' business.

It was because of that...and a lot of other things, to sort of quote Goodfellas.

He tried to kill Ace, which would bring in a lot of heat and get rid of a huge money maker for the mob. He started doing typical mob stuff in Las Vegas, which he was not supposed to be doing. I don't think it's mentioned in the movie, but Vegas was a "free" town that wasn't under any particular mob family's control and any family could get in the casino business there. One guy/family trying to run the town like any other would piss a lot of people off and bring down the heat.

Plus his antics (including several murders) brought in a lot of heat, which Ace brings up many times to various characters. He got involved with Ginger and fucking around with other connected guys' wives is also against the rules as it creates drama and can interfere with business and attract heat. He also had that cop's house shot up and all of them were hooked on drugs. Then he had plans to kill some bosses and take over. Frank probably told the bosses all about that, I imagine.

Him trying to kill Ace was probably the last straw.

Goodfellas just works more as a series of still images used to create the illusion of movement. There is a magic to it, like The Wizard of Oz or 2001.

It's kind of like comparing tacos and pizza....I have a clear personal favorite, but I can't fault anyone on the other side, as they're both amazing.

That being said, I like Casino so much more. Las Vegas in the 60's/70's was fascinating.
