The problem is that not having a personal vehicle will lock me out of a LOT of work. Ive been to LA atop, and the trains and busses all have really awful hours and stop running frustratingly early. If I cant be versatile in my job search because of that, I might as well already be dead in the water

Bro, lots of people live just fine with no car. You're really making excuses.

We've been telling you for years you need to deal with your family issues and get away from them but you don't want to do that yet. You aren't ready to be independent from them for whatever reason. So until then you need to just put your head down and find a job.

Yeah, you should really consider dedicating time to explore your family relationship in therapy alongside trying to establish independence and self-actualization. Because this shit is not easy to do alone. It will continue to be difficult.

You can do it on your own if you're not ready if you actually put your nose to the grindstone but you don't even want to use public transportation so it's obvious you're not going to do what's necessary.

Maybe he needs friends. Depending on the friends, they could help. Or even a boyfriend. I know my BF helps me through a lot of things. I'm not saying just go out and find a bf. But at least finding a friend could help. It's hard to break ties with an abusive family with no one on your side. But with someone there, you won't feel completely alone...

Ive tried since May 2017 to get a decent job anywhere, but all the professional places I apply to, be it here in Florida, or New York, or Los Angeles, never call me back. Even when I give them calls to make sure my resume went through, since that works sometimes to secure me an interview.

But in the year and a half Ive been here, the only jobs Ive gotten are little temp positions, moving jobs, or Walmart, where Im currently at. My resume is pretty good, I have 5 years of office work under my belt, and some good internship experience. I have a college degree and everything too. Why cant a single entry level office position call me back and keep me?

I dunno, I have $1500 in my bank account after rent and my sisters birthday present. And with only 2 months left on my lease, Im not going to make enough money to do what I want. Im not even gonna have access to my car should I choose to move on my own.

Idk why Im even posting this shit here. Life sucks and I wish it would hurry and end, or get to the good part. Im just really bummed that Im 24 and havent even taken the first real step in the direction I want to.

tc so you don't want retail or fast food? do you have a degree?

I was out of work for a year and a few months due to battling through bad depression and had gaps in other areas due to some terrible situations in life. I adjusted my resume to gloss over that, used a great template and made all my job titles and tasks seem way more important than they were. I also have no degree but have a lot of certificates and good work experience in positions to companies due to internships and connections I built all the way back in high school (this is a game changer for your entire life and I've only just now recognized and benefitted from this in my late 20s). I don't do retail, fast food, dogs or children and my background was software, office, entertainment and writing so those were the only fields I was willing to accept.

I got an interview to do office work for the freaking government of all things in a HIGHLY competitive position. They called me in for a multi person interview with people who were in the company for decades so they took it VERY seriously and I had to be drug tested AND fingerprinted as well. I had a story I practiced just in case they asked about why I left any job or if time frame was an issue. I also prepared for typical questions like challenges, where you see yourself and such. I was confident beyond words because I knew what I wanted to say beforehand and I was clear and in depth as I could be.

I came dressed to impress complete with a fresh haircut and good cologne but not in a way that was overdone to show that image was important but that I also understood how their work environment operated and that I could fit in. I impressed the hell out of them at that interview, made it seem like I CARED about the job as opposed to just wanted it. I at no time made it sound like I needed it and had pen and paper ready just in case and my resume in hand.

I asked questions about them that were personal and professional. I tried to get a ready on their energy and gear things specifically toward my interviewers before I asked them things as well. One pro is I ran into one interviewer on my way there without knowing who they were and already complimented them, wished them a good day, smiled and showed I was in a good mood. That's another thing, I tried to smile and make work appropriate comments to get them to smile as well. They tested me with the pen thing so I could write and I did. Though they told me straight out that it was a temporary position but that they were looking to hire permanent. Basically, they know the job is tough and MANY people can't cut it or quit hence why they do temps first.

By day 3, I was in with my co-workers and one outright told me they have no doubt I would get hired full time going off all the other people before me comparatively even weeks later as most are out after a month max. I take a million notes and ask a ton of questions. By week 2 I felt like I actually got everything and worked there. Week 3 I operated entirely on my own with no help. Week 4 people said I handle things like I have been there for years and my supervisor has said multiple times she wants me full time so after the temp period is over in about 2 months, I get full benefits and a $5 raise and my workload doesn't change at all.

If I could do it, you can. I can relate to you in a lot of ways from family to the struggling to find work throughout life. I too live in the city though I ONLY take public transport since it's VERY good here in Boston for everyday needs and a car is purely optional. Even if you live and/or work outside the city, there's a lot of public transport options still available to you and are FAR cheaper than maintaining a car as well.

Hopefully my life story can help you out some. Best of luck.

I'm at a VERY laid back location though I deal with the other branches already and they seem cool too. My pay was already about 5 dollars over the state minimum wage and as I said I get a $5 raise in 2 months or less from now so I'm VERY happy with my current situation to say the least. The timing just sucks since I did plan to move out of state entirely next year (sick of winters, namely snow and the lack of options for someone of my tastes here on the east coast) but I am seriously thinking of delaying that move another year due how amazing this is all turning out. This could have me stuck here for more years or even for life due to it how good I have it now despite it not being what I truly want which is move to San Diego :/

There's MANY positions since I work for the transportation company and it's an ENORMOUS organization given it deals with THE ENTIRE STATE at default but we also deal with EVERY OTHER STATE. I can even move to software down the line should I choose which is what I actually want since I did coding bootcamps 2 years ago and got into coding and can do CSS and Javascript. I actually worked for them in a different department and transportation branch back in 2012 which is what I am sure got me a look at in the first place by them given how competitive it is and how many people they flag out the gate as a no. Funny since back then I was early 20s and didn't take it seriously and didn't do a good job. It was just a job I worked because I had to and I didn't know what I had in my hands for connections and career growth. Now I do now that I'm back in.

Anyway, I deal with insurance agencies, policies, registrations and such all through the digital systems so I don't do desk things or work with customers. Every state has a transportation division of some kind, (Massachusetts has several) as well as how EVERY state has a DMV (it's RMV here in Massachusetts) so I would DEFINITELY look into that. Even if you start at the desk, you can work your way up. At least here in MA you can.

Oh, I forgot to mention that good temp agencies can be a LIFESAVER. Not only will they find you stuff while you look yourself, many agencies can get around someone being under-qualified and who would have been otherwise unable to get various positions. That's actually how I got my government job back in 2012 which obviously lead to me getting another one 6 years later. Crazy how life works.

I don't know how they advertise to the public tbh. I can't recall finding them online at one of those places. I manually search for my jobs as well as use those services and temp agencies. I'm pretty sure I just looked up office jobs with parameters of tasks and salary on google when I was charting what I was interested in, it came up and then I applied. Asking around on message board helps too. Even something like reddit can give you invaluable information about what you may not know. I use EVERYTHING so never rely on just one source.

I applied for the airport and high end hotels directly and then saw they were posting things looking for people so they at least do it. I wanted to work with them since obviously amazing benefits with the traveling options (which I am VERY interested in doing), decent-good pay and the amazing cultural options you get dealing with people all over the world which is something I am personally very interested in as a historian and cultural enthusiast.

I'm considering doing one as a 2nd gig on the weekend part time since even then I would be entitled to the benefits and more money wouldn't hurt either. I am fortunate in the sense that if I put enough time in and/or get into one of those airports or hotel jobs, I could get a state transfer to California so still be employed by them when I get there and not worry about my pay changing since the cost of living in SD is virtually the same as Boston's.

Temp agencies that specialize in office and hospitality are GREAT to get your foot in since they do all the hard stuff for you. Unless you're an idiot, screw up in some drastic way or it's just THAT competitive, you've basically already got the job if the temp agency calls you back and says the job wants to interview you. Well if the agency itself isn't trash you'll do pretty good in them getting your foot in the door. Government websites ALWAYS have career options so try there as well.

Also think of every government/state (often they are one and the same) agency or program you can think of, and google them one by one. Chances are there are many programs and things government run that you aren't even aware of. When I did a search I was shocked when I learned how close government and state stuff overlapped with each other.

They are EXCELLENT places to add to your resume even if it's entry level stuff because EVERYONE sees government work as a big deal and they will auto think you are reliable, know proper work etiquette and such because you got trusted to work for them. Even if you can't move up in the specific agency/program you work for, they can help you get your foot in another or at a non government job you want that will look at that past experience as the reason they want to interview you.

'
This is most cities in the world, not just Cali. I come from the city so I know this life and personally I can only do cities or live closely around them. So coming from Boston, one of the highest cost of living areas in the entire country, Cali is the same thing except the weather isn't shit since Cali doesn't have to deal with -30 weather, blizzards and many other weather situations that only bring up cost of living and make it that much harder to live or enjoy life.

ANYWHERE is where dreams go to die if you did no actual research before you went or had reasonable plans and goals. To anybody else, you're fine. Most people I know that moved from Boston to Cali loved it and never came back. I'm better off than a number of them and have more resources to work with so am in the same scenario but with better weather, culture and options that apply to me since my scene is GREATLY represented in California but nearly non-existent in Mass as a whole and it's depressing as fuck on top of the weather which hurts my soul.

Plus the people the dreams go to die saying goes to are people trying to be famous, act and the like, not the everyday individual doing everyday careers...

Philadelphia ranks in the top 25 most expensive places in the US to live out of 100 cities. That's not cheap even though not in the absurdly expensive range either. That being said, Boston is often in the top 5 or top 10 so has Philly beat. All that being said, I've been to Philly and know people from it. We all agree Philly's trash. I would hope lower quality cities have lower cost of living.

I want to move to San Diego and Boston is way ahead of SD in cost of living. San Diego is often a full 10 places below Boston on such rankings though sometimes they're close with Boston still being more expensive. The money I'd save in SD just for it not having brutal winters where a sizable portion of your budget goes to in Boston, alone would make a huge difference as well. Even then, I know how to live in Boston with low income being someone that came from such an environment so I can do it anywhere in the country if I needed to. Fortunately I don't anymore. But even in the most expensive places, there's ways to live there with low income. Many people just don't know how since that's not where they came from.

How the hell is winter a sizable portion of your budget? Heating bills I guess? But you're comparing it to a place where you'll be paying more for A/C, so it probably balances out somewhat. Maybe snow tires too, but people change their tires regularly anyway. And most winter clothes are something you should only have to buy every few years.

Trash is a strong word for it. I like Philly. Could it be better? Yes. Does it have a lot of crime? Yes. Does that make it trash? No.

1. My electric bill in the summer is low as hell. I'm not a big AC user and I get 95+ degree summers. Hottest day this year in Boston was about 105 with high humidity so felt even hotter than that and we had a number of those days. I'm not inside a lot when it's hot either. In the winter, I don't go out much because i hate going out when cold and, many of the things I like to do are summer only save the ones you want to do indoor as well and I don't with most of them.

At the same time, I have -30 winters (though -0 is much close) so I get extreme winters and summers. I use heat out the ass because even with building heat, it's not enough when that cold so have to run the oven as well which is electric. Guess which bill goes up? When pipes freeze (and they always do) have to use the stove more to heat up warm water and that's electric. I get sicker and I have to stay cleaner so more money spent on medicine, tissues and sanitizers.

Plowing snow, alternative routes which cost more money due to the impact snow has on the city at times. Things like snow tires and such. Winter is ALWAYS more expensive than summer here. I'm a fashionable person though regardless you WILL have to replace your winter clothes a lot, namely your shoes, coats and boots. My summer stuff lasts forever basically. I don't have to replace it. It's worth noting that we get a LOT of rain year round so that's another issue, especially paired with winter and the snow.

There's many of other things like architecture, culture, flora and such that I'm just over the east coast in terms of living. The things I value and like are default states for west coast, including my career options.

It's accurate for me and many I speak to but hey, opinions. One man's trash is another man's treasure. I find most the US to be trash so, there's that as well.

I want to move to San Diego

Have fun with $4/gal gas.

I'm from SD and I'm planting my roots in philly. It's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

That's nice but I have no reason to care about what Philly thinks so it doesn't matter. I know a lot of people from Philly that moved from there because they found it trash. If you like it, good for you. The only thing good about it for me is the show with its name and even then, it's filmed in California...

Boston is $3, SD is $3.50. It's not a big difference. Not to mention no snow tires, snow maintenance or shoveling in SD since NO SNOW. Plus again, lower cost of living in SD compared to Boston and SD offers higher pay in my profession than Boston does on average. Cost of living between them are pretty similar. If you can afford one, you can afford the other and if broke in one you're broke in the other.

I don't find Philly good to plant roots in or visit ever again. Good on that for life. If I'm going to be on the east coast in a city, why pick Philly over Boston or New York? Both of them FAR outclass Philly.
