Like I imagine if I were buying a PS4 for the first time I'd just go Pro, but is there a real reason to upgrade or am I good?

If you have a 4k tv you'll notice some graphical improvements and somewhat better performance.
It's negligible at best imo. I don't have a 4k tv so I can't comment on that but what I will say is that I would've gotten another base model if they were in stock when my launch console broke. --- There sure are a lot of different mes just like you have a lot of different yous! You gotta remember people will act like it makes all the difference to justify their purchase. You gotta take what owners say with a grain of salt. I know Id probably be trying to convince myself I didn't waste money upgrading

I did that when there was a deal. They gave me 250 for my 500 GB slim towards the pro. Right now you'll get 212 with a 1tb slim, 200 for a 500 GB. I can't see it being worth 200 bucks out of pocket to upgrade.
