there's about the same amount of mercury in a vaccine as in a can of tuna. regular tuna eaters must be particularly autistic according to anti-vaxxer logic

Can you explain why some kids are normal going to the doctors office for a shot, they get sick and then they are mentally slow afterwards? I'm assuming "afterwards" is an exaggeration. The first signs of autism and the MMR vaccine (AKA "The Autism Shot") generally occur at about the same time in a child's life. And if you're not exaggerating and you meant literally that the child gets the shot and becomes slow later that day, you're going to need to supply a damn good source. --- I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically ... Before the internet, the average person didn't really have the resources to have a "voice" on certain issues. This lead to a society that, in general, was comfortable to deferring to experts or authorities on topics they knew nothing about.
Since the internet, your average person who doesn't have any business holding an opinion on expert topics throws in their two cents. To the uninformed eyes, that voice is equally as authoritative as the experts. Combine this with common human biases, like confirmation bias, pretty much people operate on their intuitions on a subject and can readily get "evidence" or at least sizable support on any position, which just entrenches their initial belief, rather than a deliberate attempt at becoming informed. Anti-vaxxers hold their beliefs under the presumption they are trying to protect their child. It's a basic instinct you can't fault them for if you treat the difficulty in differentiating the "signal from the noise" in today's information age as a systemic issue, rather than a personal fault. After all, even educated people fall for it. The only way to sway them is either personal experience (e.g., a loved one contracts a serious illness and they change their stance as a result of that experience) or if you can somehow convince them that you're "on their side" in terms of the wanting the best for their child (or even their own health) and that vaccination is conducive to that. And even then, it can be difficult because of the aforementioned echo chambers the internet is so prone to hosting. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
