Except the Dreamcast wasn't that bad. Actually, in the early days of PS2, I vastly prefer the Dreamcasts library over it.

Not saying it didn't have its problems but you seem to forget a couple gems that Nintendo kind of screwed up on. Virtual Boy being one of the bigger screw-ups. Sega's new President chose to leave the console world, instead of fixing the problem with newer launches of the Dreamcast. Had they fixed the problem early on, and added a dvd player to later editions of the Dreamcast, we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.

Actually, these days, many say the same about Nintendo that they once said about Sega, that it should abandon the console wars and just switch to software.

Also, you can't act like Nintendo doesn't suck ass these days. Sure their software is top notch, but the switch has its own share of failures, like for example, not being able to charge the machine in kickstand mode, or having graphics similar to that of a late entry PS3.

And its not that the problems can't be fixed. We don't know how well the Switch will work 3 years from now when they have fully figured out its software/hardware capabilities, and the switches charge issue could have fixed itself with an adjustment of where the power adapter fits into the machine.

Lol this isn't about the quality of the console. By the time the Dreamcast came out Sega's fate was already sealed. Console was doomed to fail from the start.

That was def the start. Like what the fuck was Sega thinking. Why would anyone bother with the 32X when a much superior product was on the way? Because it was cheaper? I'm pretty sure most people were saving up for the Saturn and PS1; no one was gonna waste any money on some shitty add on.

I concur that they had some of the most piss-poor management at the tail-end of console development. The Dreamcast is one of my favorite consoles ever, but the decisions Sega of Japan had been making were just baffling. One that comes to mind was pushing the Saturn's launch forward so soon that retailers couldnt produce advertising in time (some of them refused to carry it).

They fluked out on Genesis, but the business end had no idea what they were doing afterwards.

And no, a DVD player was not going to save the Dreamcast. By the time they phased the Dreamcast out, they had lost so much money; spending more money on making a DVD player would have made their grave even deeper. The holiday 2000 season made it clear that Sega had to drop out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast#Competition

Moore stated that the Dreamcast would need to sell 5 million units in the U.S. by the end of 2000 in order to remain a viable platform, but Sega ultimately fell short of this goal with some 3 million units sold. Moreover, Sega's attempts to spur increased Dreamcast sales through lower prices and cash rebates caused escalating financial losses. Instead of an expected profit, for the six months ending September 2000, Sega posted a 17.98 billion ($163.11 million) loss, with the company projecting a year-end loss of 23.6 billion. This estimate was more than doubled to 58.3 billion, and in March 2001, Sega posted a consolidated net loss of 51.7 billion ($417.5 million). While the PS2's October 26 U.S. launch was marred by shortageswith only 500,000 of a planned 1 million units shipped due to a manufacturing glitchthis did not benefit the Dreamcast as much as expected, as many disappointed consumers continued to wait for a PS2while the PSone, a remodeled version of the original PlayStation, was the best-selling console in the U.S. at the start of the 2000 holiday season. According to Moore, "the PlayStation 2 effect that we were relying upon did not work for us ... people will hang on for as long as possible ... What effectively happened is the PlayStation 2 lack of availability froze the marketplace". Eventually, Sony and Nintendo held 50 and 35 percent of the US video game market, respectively, while Sega held only 15 percent.

Had Sega not fucked up so hard with the Saturn, they wouldn't have found themselves in that predicament.

.....Dreamcast was successful for 18 months. The main reason it started to fail was because the PS2 was capable of playing dvds. Even if Sega wanted to put a dvd player in their machine there was a big issue preventing that, Sony was the only company making dvd players at that time.

It was also cheaper to purchase a PS2 to play dvds than an actual dvd player.

And just so you understand, Sega released Dreamcast in 98, the PS2 didn't come out until 2000, and during that time no console had a dvd player included in it, nor was it a huge thing during that time. Hard to prepare for something like that.

Some people, myself included think that during those 2 years Sega released some of the best games of that generation of console, including but not limited to: Shenmue 1, Phantasy Star Online 1, Ready 2 Rumble, Skies of Arcadia, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Grandia 2, and Soul Calibur.

IIRC Sega was working on four consoles at the same time code named Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune, and Mars.

Two projects fell through and the other two became the 32x and the Sega Saturn.

Had Sega not fucked up so hard with the Saturn, they wouldn't have had to release the Dreamcast so soon. They flopped with the Saturn and made a desperate bid to save themselves with one more console. In doing so, they couldn't properly prepare themselves for any future consoles from their competition. So my point still stands; Sega fell off hard after the Genesis.

Stop harping about pointless shit just to wank the Dreamcast; yes we know it had good games but that's not what this topic is about.

Hayao Nakayama is really to blame. He's responsible for the 32X, Saturn's botched launch, Saturn's overly complex hardware, etc.

Yet they're still around, when most companies that have a hit like that would straight up roll over and die.

I think Sega's doing pretty well all things considered.

Imagine if Sega and Sony teamed up after Sony's talks with Nintendo fell through.

Or if Sega accepted hardware from Silicon Graphics for the Saturn (Silicon later did hardware for the N64 after talks with Sega fell through)
