It makes sense in areas where you can get a place for $700, sure

Where I live a decent 1 bedroom is around $2500

You don't need $5000 left over after rent to consider the rent affordable. Plain and simple.

I think the rule is more in reference to being able to continue to support yourself in the event your job is terminated. Your savings would diminish quickly at $2.500 a month.

This. Burning away your savings on rent is no way to live.

It doesn't necessarily mean they won't rent the apartment to you. I've gotten places making about 2.2x with decent credit.

So the logic is that you need to have that extra $5000 a month so you can save most of it and continue paying rent after you lose your job?

They dont want people to have savings. They want us to basically tell our employers to make our checks out to the HOA, IRS, and medical insurance.

People arent supposed to have savings now because the far-leftists think people who save money are bad. What has this world come to?

The majority of people won't be good for it though if they lose their job. A lot of people are living paycheck to paycheck.

After, probably

This is why I'm saying. You need to make $100k before tax to rent a 1 bedroom? Doesn't make sense.

Saying "majority" is speculation - there will always be extenuating circumstances for a portion of the population, yes. In those cases, the lessor may choose to decline your offer in favor of another, more financially stable person.

my current apartment had a similiar qualifier for applying. except it was 2.5x. we barely made it.

but my job has changed and i took a pay cut so we would no longer qualify. but hey, look we're doing fine.

turns out budgeting and strategy >>>>> just throwing money at it.

No, you don't. However, if your rent for a 1 bedroom is $2500, you likely need an extra $5000 a month to afford your food, clothing, utilities, transportation, etc.

It's extremely rare that housing is crazy expensive, and everything else is cheap.

It's just a guideline they can use at their discretion to deny undesirables(like me for example). When I was looking for apartments I was denied by 90% of the places I wanted to rent despite having a perfect payment history for every bill, high credit score and a high income($80K). My girlfriend would go and apply and she would be tentatively approved everywhere even though she made 20K less than me and had a lower credit score.

Why are you an undesirable if you have good credit and a high income?

Guess, should be very easy since we're talking housing discrimination.

The rule I was taught was out of your total income: 50% should got to rent and bills, 30% into savings, and 20% should be disposible. And thay you should have at minimum 9 months saved up to pay for bills in case you lose your job
