If Geno Whirl worked on bosses, he'd be way better.

doesn't matter when he's stupid strong and gets a buffing spell to get even stronger (and it patches up what's supposed to be his "weakness", his defense)

and yet that didn't stop them from fucking up exor

Super Mario RPG is probably the most fun RPG I've ever played (and I've played a ton) despite it's balance flaws

I think it's great because it's short like Chrono Trigger. It only takes like 15 hours to beat the game and maybe another 3 at most if you do all the sidequests too. That's why it's so replayable to me.

It is. Game balance is hard.

You ever play Sailor Moon Another Story?

I attempted to play that. I figured it had to be better than the shit they were airing on Cartoon Network and several people said "It's actually pretty good!"

I got to the fourth girl's part and just couldn't put up with the dialogue anymore. The gameplay was solid but that's it.

I never really found Geno that interesting tbh.

Storywise he's just the plot exposition guy and once he does his schtick explaining what the main quest is supposed to be about(all of ONE SINGLE SCENE in the whole game!) he turns invisible and almost never interacts with the rest of the game ever.

Mechanics-wise, again, bleh. In the overworld, you're best off fielding Mallow and spamming his cheap lightning bolts to take care of large groups of mooks, saving FP(and less tedium to heal it back up with items). For smaller groups of tougher mooks, Mario's so strong already that any character combo can beat them up with a few basic attacks. Oh sure, Geno Whirl is a guaranteed OHKO, but what difference does it make when any mook is a 2HKO at best anyway?
His only value is boosting stats in boss battles, which to be honest is nifty but the game is easy enough that it doesn't make for a noteworthy difference. And for the one boss battle where it might actually come in handy, his very schtick is stripping any buffs you have all the time.

At least his specials look cool I guess. But then again, so do Mallow's, so, bleh.

I like the game, but I have a question. Why do people like Geno so much? I never particularly found the writing or characters that great. What makes him appeal to so many people.

Also, this is an underrated VG song.

After reading the comments about how it sounds like the song in Pulp Fiction during that scene, I can't think of that section of the game the same again.

I just opened up that scene on YouTube, muted it and then played it synced up to your link.

He was the strongest character in the game attack-wise which meant that most people probably used him.

He had really flashy moves which contributed to his coolness

He had a somewhat interesting character design

Its kind of odd how many people want him in Smash but I can see the appeal.

Sure, but there's a lot of folk who act like he's a deep character and one of the greatest VG characters ever. Seriously.

I brought it up because it's another RPG from that era with awful game balance. You're characters are either too weak to kill anything, or so strong they kill everything with several hundreds (and later thousands) of points damage overflow. And the difference often utter defeat or victory falls within the boundary of one or two levels or a single equip (the red pupil).

Certain characters stats work in ridiculous ways. All viable DPs have no defense and die instantly to a stray gust of wind, while all of the balanced characters deal less than 5% of the damage of the DPS to such a degree that it's impossible for them to win without a dps who is kept on constant life support. Mercury @ lv20 has the damage of Mars/Jupiter/Uranus @ lv10, and it get exponentially worse from there.

From the gameplay perspective the game is almost boring. It's a super linear numbers game with no strategy beyond grind levels, kill enemy. Despite this, I think I've played through the whole thing like ten times.

I mean, it's not as good as any of the first 3 paper mario or first three mario and luigi games, but it set the stage for them, so to speak.

SMRPG > PM: TTYD > PM > M&L: BiS > M&L: SS > M&L: PiT

I haven't played any others. Super Paper Mario is also good, but it's way different from the others

Well as long as we're ranking things, here's my own list.

1. Bowser's Inside Story
2. Thousand Year Door
3. Super Mario RPG
4. Superstar Saga
4.5 Super Paper Mario (if we're counting it)
5. Paper Jam
6. Paper Mario 64
7. Dream Team
8. Color Splash
9. Partners In Time
10. Sticker Star

TBQH I really don't care for the original Paper Mario. I liked it at the time, but everytime I go back and play it I like it less and less. Also Partners In Time didn't do it for me either. Game had bad pacing and felt really short compared to most others. Time travel theme was wasted too...

Sticker Star makes sense since I literally bought it, hated it, and sold it on eBay without finishing it in the span of 4 days. At least Color Splash I was able to make it to the end of the game.

Another thing I forgot for Bowser is all his defensive armor is fucked too. You get Bowser around the halfway point of the game, but literally his best armor for 90% of the game is this weak universal armor you can buy one of the earlier towns called "work pants". All his specialty armor that you get, right until the 2nd to last dungeon, is inferior to this piece of shit universal armor you get in the town before him. Everyone else's equipment outclasses the work pants by the next town, but Bowser doesn't until near the end of the game. That's pathetic >_>

Don't let all this easy, unbalanced talk skew your enjoyment of it, the game is still fantastic overall! And it's short, so there almost no filler, kinda like Chrono Trigger.

Plus there's definitely a few spots that first timers will probably find tough too >_>

As long as you see where he was before he disappeared, you can still go through that door after you get in a fight and continue on.

Plus he only goes through either the upper-right or lower-right doors until the very last square. On the last square he goes through the upper-left, but he stays there longer than the others, so you'll definitely see him when he's there.

SMRPG is extremely charming and that shouldn't be forgotten imo.

I played Paper Mario after TTYD but actually think I prefer it partly because it relies on more 'normal' Mario worlds and enemies to fill its world while TTYD obviously uses a lot of new material. Both are obviously great though.

After TTYD though I felt like every about the series took a dive. Super Paper Mario is literally not good, the aesthetic of the whole series began to get far too cleancut and sort of boring and the writing got a bit too zany for my liking too.

everytime she uses it your opponents attack/special attack goes down

so a couple hits from it will even make the final boss start doing joke damage

That's the reason I like Paper Mario 64 more than SMRPG or TTYD personally. I think it does the best job of feeling like a mario game due to the characters and settings feeling a lot more traditionally mario

shouldn't matter as much as it does to me but it really pulls everything together for me in a way
