You're at home one day after a long day's work with a headache, when you hear your teenage son arguing with their long time friend outside. You know he was going over to stay at his friends house tonight so you don't get what they are arguing about.

Suddenly your son's clearly irritated friend bursts in the door like an old western salloon and says

"I can't keep this shit secret anymore, it's so stupid."

Your red faced son yells "No don't tell him!" trying to pull the friend back

But the friend ignores him and exclaims "I'm sick of keeping it secret. I can't keep lying and hiding just because you want to. Look Mr [Lastname]. We believe in fiscal conservatism, traditional values, religious rights, civil liberties, strong boarders, free trade, freedom, small government, individual responsibility and we oppose globalism. You should have been told a long time ago."

Your son hides behind their 'friend' as if somehow that would keep them out of sight.

I'd agree to disagree with him on several points but otherwise be fine. People, especially younger people, need to come to their own beliefs and not have them simply shoved down their throat.

That said, I would tolerate absolutely no racism, sexism, homophobia or the other kinds of things people often try to pass off as religious freedom or personal beliefs. I can't make him not feel that way, but as long as he were in my house he will give voice to those ideas.

Stop trying to argue just to argue.

You're the one threatening to toss off your kids for unspecified reasons.

I mean for example if he supports banning internal funding of Mosques because there have been repeated links to terrorism via thoue sources. Is that hate-filled racism?

What if he is against abortion? Is that sexism?

What does that have to do with his beliefs? If he commits a crime, then obviously I as a parent did not do a good enough job of teaching him about the consequences of his actions. If he wants to be a conservative that's fine, he wouldn't be the only one in my family. If he does something that disrespects me, then I'll remind him where the door is.

This. Him having different political values would be perfectly acceptable and understandable, but showing or speaking of any kind of bigotry would be an instant grounding or (if he still hasn't stopped once he's 18) throwing him out of the house.

Yes. Some of us grew up in ultra liberal communities so supporting all conservative issues was an easy way to rebel. Then some of us grew up some more after high school and ultimately landed in the middle of the road.
