The Hafen is a personalized Minute.
The Minute is a "USV" (lol it's still the US) tank named after the Minuteman, and is a blatant M4AE8 Sherman. Fitting, since the Sherman was best tank, WWII.

I've been thinking about picking up VC4 on Switch, but I haven't really played any of the others (have the original on Steam but only got a few missions in before my gaming computer crapped out). Am I going to be missing anything critical plot-wise (or any-wise, really) if I just jump into VC4?

I haven't played 4, so I don't know for sure, but I doubt anything from VC2 or 3 will be referenced. VC3 is unlikely to come up partly because it was about a "top secret, everything you do we'll deny" squad, plus the lack of English release might mean Sega doesn't want to risk alienating those of us who didn't get to play it (although there is a fan translation).

VC2 won't be referenced because it hasn't happened yet- VC1, 3 and 4 all take place during the same war, following the same conflict from different perspectives, and VC2 is the only game to take place after that war ends. It's also kinda crap- the battles are still good, but the story is... ugh. I think they were trying to catch the Persona 3 bandwagon with its "Schoolkids fight evil between classes", and just failed miserably.

You'll miss out on a handful of references from 1 but that's about it.

VC4 is on an entirely different front of the war.

VC is WWII.

VC1 takes place basically in Poland, featuring "Kick the Nazis out of Poland".

VC4 is "You are Polish. You joined the Brits. You're backed by the Americans. You're invading Nazi Russia in the Winter." The game's during the same major events as 1, but takes place in an entirely different field of battle.

And just as any other WWII story, it's not the overarching war that's the conflict, it's what's going on with the characters.
