Like...what's the trick to not slipping into this.

I'll use Ace Attorney 5 as my example. The last case of the game piles on the personal trauma for Athena Cykes where it's all "I KILLED MY MOM AND REPRESSED THE THOUGHT, I'M A MONSTER!" and you get the sense that they were really digging to try to get the player to feel something for her when, in reality, the reaction was more bemusement that they were pushing so hard to get people to feel that way.

So what's the trick? How does one not trip over themselves when trying to get people to feel emotional about something?
