He introduced us to another alien species (i.e. Gungans) and I get that Lucas wanted to add a funny, adorkable character to the story. Unfortunately, the humor did not work, but that's hit or miss anyway. What does Rose add to the story? She is obnoxious and just bogged down her scenes.
