Millennials watching Friends on Netflix have expressed reservations about the popular sitcoms storylines, describing it as transphobic, homophobic and sexist.

While the show ran for more than 10 years until 2004, it arrived on Netflix at the end of last year in the UK.

The series, starring Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer, remains one of the most popular shows in the US.

However, some millennials found LGBT plot points left them feeling uncomfortable for example when Chandler was paranoid about being perceived as a gay man or made mean-spirited jokes about his cross-dressing dad.

Sexism seeps in when Rachel hires a nanny for her daughter Emma, but Emmas father Ross cant handle the fact that the nanny is a man. Ross takes it one step further to being homophobic by asking if hes gay.

Not to mention Monica (played by Courtney Cox) was never allowed to forget she was once overweight theres even an episode where Joey Tribbiani (played by LeBlanc) yells, Some girl ate Monica!

New audiences claimed that Rachel would have been fired for sexual harassment because she hires an assistant who isnt qualified for the position because she wants to date him.

Theres also the controversial relationship between Monica and her fathers best friend whos 20 years older than her, but it was perceived as even more uncomfortable in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and #MeToo stories.

The sitcom has also received criticism for its lack of diversity there were only two notable non-white characters on the show: Ross girlfriend Julie and Dr Charlie Wheeler.

Friends still may be of peoples favourite series, but that doesnt mean it isnt problematic in 2018.

Is there anyone on CE who agrees with these points? Other than the lack of minorities (which is definitely odd for a NYC setting), seems like much of the other stuff is kind of reaching.

But in IASIP they don't make an effort to make the characters not seem like total pieces of shit, whereas in HIMYM they go to lengths to make Barnie loveable and his behavior acceptable, no?

To be fair that's pretty different considering Always Sunny didn't try to hide it. They're all meant to be awful characters. Dennis being an implied rapist was a running joke. Barnie was meant to come off as a "Oh he's just a manwhore" when his schemes would count as rape irl >_>

Millennials love Friends though tbh.

Especially because some people on the left will argue in favor of things like cultural relativism as being considered PC.

Hell, pretty much any English course you'll take will tell you to look at books through the lens of their time period...Same should apply for tv/media.

You can both do this and point out things that haven't aged well. It's not like that means we should just never talk about it because they're old. You would need to talk about it to give context as to why those things used to be seen differently compared to now.

I mean, yeah. But like, getting outright offended and riled up isn't the healthiest reaction lol. Like, looking at it through the lens of the era helps make building blocks to "how did we get here?"
