I don't mean how many movies, I mean how many different Godzilla creatures are there in one continuity?

I haven't watched many of the films, but I just watched the first film (1954) last night and Godzilla dies at the end. I was curious so I read about the second film (1955) and apparently they say that the Godzilla in that one is a different Godzilla of the same species. So how many are there?

There are two: one who dies in the first movie and one who succeeds him. Three members of the species including Godzilla's adopted son.

The Japanese version of the original film prefaces this with Dr. Yamane stating in the closing scene that he refuses to believe that Godzilla is the only one of his kind and that another might appear someday.

The US version omits this part, so the second Godzilla just kinda comes out of nowhere.

Yeah I remember that line from the original.

So all of the Godzilla vs. Movies feature the same Godzilla from the second movie?

Not sure if there even is one continuity given how many times Godzilla itself has changed

For the most part, yes.

2000's Godzilla versus Megaguirus presents an alternate timeline in which the original Godzilla never died and GMK features the original Godzilla resurrected as some sort of ghost thing.

Every other Godzilla stars the second Godzilla, but in different continuities. They even made two movies where the second Godzilla battled the original Godzilla's roboticized skeleton.
