Authorities of Slidell, Louisiana took 24-year-old Jeffery St. Amand Jr. into custody on 15 counts of child pornography last Wednesday, after his wife reported that he had "Anime Porn" on his computer.

According to the police, St. Amand's wife first alerted the authorities on May 30 after finding her husband viewing "Japanese animated child pornography or 'Anime Porn'" on a shared laptop. (The police defined the phrase as "very sexually explicit of pornographic comics and animation, particularly those of Japanese origin.") A follow-up investigation by Detective Brian Brown and agents from the Louisiana Attorney General's Office alleged that Amand had compiled images of "prepubescent females, all appeared to be between 4 and 5 years of age."

The Slidell Police Department's Public Information Officer, Captain Kevin Foltz, confirmed the arrest with ANN but stressed that the charges against St. Amand are not related to the animated pornography, which is not against the law in Louisiana. He explained that the animations and St. Amand's statements served as probable cause to find the aforementioned images, which were photographs of real children. He also indicated that more charges may be filed against St. Amand relating to actual molestation.

True, it's not like this is Canada or something.

Although I do recall someone in the U.S. being convicted for writing fictional child porn. Even though I'm certain that such scenes pop up here and there in regularly sold literature.

I don't think anything animated alone is grounds for a child pornography charge. AFAIK the law agrees with me.

But I'm not against the idea of people who are known to have this material on their computer being subject to surveillance.
